Controller- Construction Industry
The Role
We're looking for a Controller to jointhe team at All Type Electric Inc. (“ATE”), a growing electrical contracting businessbased in Edmonton, and offices in Calgary and Vancouver. This is a hands-on,high-impact role where you'll partner closely with company leadership andemployee-owners to drive financial clarity, optimize operations, and supportlong-term strategic success.
You'll be responsible for the fullaccounting cycle, financial reporting, payroll, and advising leadership—whileidentifying opportunities for improved systems, processes, and profitabilityacross our operations.
What You'll Do
Strategic Partnership
Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the
President, tailoring insights to the realities of an electrical contracting business.
Leverage your industry experience to provide guidance on cost control, payroll processes, and financial forecasting.
Translate financial data into actionable recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
Financial Operations & Oversight
Lead full-cycle accounting operations including A/P, A/R, GL, segment profitability, and job based revenue recognition, by working collaboratively with two AR/AP Administrators.
Manage bi-weekly payroll process with associated reporting requirements, such as payroll taxes
Manage required reporting (corporate tax, GST, PST) to government organizations
Lead month-end and year-end closes, including balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, fixed asset entries, and deferred revenue adjustments.
Work collaboratively with two AR/AP Administrators for month-end and year-end support.
Assist ATE’s external auditors for year-end reporting and audit requirements
Regularly review trial balances and income statement classifications to ensure accuracy and compliance with US GAAP.
Oversee monthly WIP (Work in Progress) schedules and ensure accurate percentage-of-completion reporting.
Reporting & Analysis
Prepare and deliver timely financial statements and variance analyses for leadership review.
Collaborate with the President on budget preparation and quarterly/annual strategic plans.
Deliver weekly and monthly key performance indicators and highlight trends affecting business performance, including labour efficiency, segment margins, and overhead recovery.
Process Improvement & Controls
Identify and implement process improvements across accounting systems and reporting workflows.
Develop and maintain internal controls and document financial procedures.
Optimize the chart of accounts and streamline project accounting practices.
Who You Are
A proactive, hands-on Controller who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic, trades or construction environment.
A strong communicator who can translate complex financial concepts for non-financial audiences, including project managers and field supervisors.
A self-starter who is comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and rolling up your sleeves when needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA designation preferred)
5+ years of experience in a Controller or Senior Accounting role
Experience in the electrical, mechanical, or broader construction/trades industry strongly preferred
Proven background with job costing, WIP reporting, and project-based revenue recognition
Familiarity with Alberta and British Columbia payroll and tax requirements
Working knowledge of Canadian GAAP – Canadian GAAP knowledge can be bridged to US GAAP reporting requirement with support from external auditors.
Proficiency in accounting software
Experience in small to medium-sized businesses
Tech-savvy and resourceful; comfortable working in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment
