Job Description
This role focuses on production MIG welding and quality control for custom metal and wire display products used in retail and grocery environments. You will work primarily with mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, performing both welding and fabrication while ensuring that all welds are both aesthetically pleasing and structurally functional. The position combines hands-on welding, inspection, and process improvement, with a clear path toward leadership and ownership of the welding department’s standards and practices.
Responsibilities
Perform production MIG welding on a variety of products, including wire and metal displays for retail and grocery environments.
Use the correct jigs and fixtures to set up and weld products accurately and efficiently.
Conduct visual and dimensional inspections to ensure all welds meet quality and aesthetic standards, with approximately 40% of time dedicated to quality control and 60% to welding.
Work primarily with mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel for the majority of production tasks.
Carry out fabrication tasks such as measuring, cutting, fitting, grinding, and assembling metal components as needed.
Read and interpret blueprints to understand product specifications, dimensions, and weld requirements.
Set up welding jigs and equipment to ensure consistency and repeatability in production.
Ensure welds are clean, aesthetic, and functional, with no weld spatter, suitable for visible retail display applications.
Adapt to changing product lines and job requirements in a production environment where projects vary.
Use fabrication equipment such as grinders, benders, punch presses, and shears safely and effectively.
Support and help refine production processes, including setting up and improving welding and quality control procedures over time.
Collaborate with team members in the welding department to meet production targets and maintain high quality standards.
Demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills to contribute positively to the department culture.
Exhibit leadership qualities with the goal of progressing into a Charge Hand role, leading the welding department and acting as a key point of contact with production leadership.
Promote a safe, respectful, and constructive work environment, helping to address and improve any negative or unproductive behaviors within the team.
Comply with union membership requirements following the probationary period in accordance with workplace policies.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all safety procedures and using required PPE.

Essential Skills
At least 3+ years of welding experience in a production or similar environment.
Proficiency in MIG welding with the ability to produce clean, consistent, and aesthetically pleasing welds.
Hands-on fabrication experience using tools such as grinders, benders, punch presses, and shears.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints accurately for dimensions, tolerances, and weld requirements.
Ability to set up jigs and fixtures for welding to ensure proper alignment and repeatability.
Strong measuring skills and ability to work accurately with tape measures and other measuring tools.
Capability to adapt quickly to changing jobs and product types, thinking through tasks and executing with minimal supervision.
Solid understanding of working with mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel in a production setting.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
Demonstrated command skills and confidence to influence and guide others in a shop environment.
Professional, respectful, and presentable demeanor suitable for a leadership-track role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certification.
Journeyman or Red Seal welder designation.
Any additional welding tickets or certifications.
Experience in plastics or metal manufacturing environments similar to the company’s operations.
First Aid certification.
Experience with TIG welding and robotic welding systems.
Exposure to production welding, fitting, grinding, and assembly in a high-volume environment.
Demonstrated leadership potential with an interest in progressing into a Charge Hand role overseeing the welding department.
Ability to handle challenging interpersonal dynamics with thick skin and a focus on creating a positive, collaborative culture.

Work Environment
The role operates in a clean, modern, and well-lit production facility that works primarily with sheet metal and plastics for major retail and grocery clients across North America. The welding department was revamped in 2022 and features new welding booth bays, updated tools, and an organized layout designed for efficiency and safety. The team currently includes six welders, and the department is actively evolving to improve processes and culture. The position follows a rotating shift schedule, typically alternating one month on days and one month on afternoons. The morning shift runs Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The afternoon shift runs Monday to Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This structure provides predictable hours with a mix of daytime and evening work. Personal protective equipment is provided, and employees are required to bring their own welding helmet. A valid STWB is required. The environment offers plenty of air circulation and natural or bright lighting, contributing to a comfortable and safe workspace. The facility includes dedicated plastic and metal departments, with the welding area focused on fabrication and assembly of display products. The culture is in transition, with a clear mandate to move away from entrenched, unproductive behaviors toward a more positive, collaborative, and improvement-focused team atmosphere. Dress is typical of an industrial welding and fabrication environment, with appropriate workwear and safety gear expected at all times.
