Job Description
This role involves performing high-quality welding and fitting work on large, custom industrial assemblies in a heavy fabrication environment. You will prepare materials, interpret detailed drawings and weld symbols, execute precise welds to specification, and ensure all work meets strict safety and quality standards. The position requires strong technical skills in welding and fabrication, careful attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced industrial setting.
Responsibilities
Select appropriate welding equipment and plan the welding sequence to ensure efficient and accurate operations.
Prepare materials by grinding, carbon arc cleaning, scale removal, or beveling to meet proper welding standards.
Apply the correct weld size according to customer specifications and industry best practices.
Inspect welds for defects using gauges and analysis techniques, and perform repairs as needed to maintain quality.
Interpret drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T standards to ensure accurate fabrication and fit-up.
Lay out, position, align, and secure components using measuring tools, clamps, and tack welds.
Shape metal parts using arc or flame cutting equipment to meet specifications or repair damaged components.
Perform fitting operations to assemble structural and fabricated components prior to welding.
Use measuring tools to verify dimensions, tolerances, and alignment throughout the fabrication process.
Coordinate closely with machining and other fabrication operations to ensure timely and accurate completion of projects.
Handle and move large steel components safely using overhead cranes and rigging equipment, following established procedure
Essential Skills
Proficiency in welding processes, including MIG and/or TIG welding, with the ability to produce consistent, high-quality welds.
Experience in grinding, carbon arc cleaning, scale removal, and beveling to prepare materials for welding.
Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T standards for accurate fabrication and assembly.
Strong fitting skills, including layout, positioning, aligning, and securing components using measuring tools, clamps, and tack welds.
Experience using arc or flame cutting equipment to cut and shape metal parts to specification.
Strong mathematical and measurement skills to ensure precise dimensions and tolerances.
Ability to inspect welds for defects using gauges and analysis techniques and to perform corrective actions when required.
Understanding of and adherence to safety standards in a heavy fabrication and welding environment.
Crane, hoist, and rigging awareness for safe handling of large steel components.
CWB certification in MIG and/or TIG welding, or equivalent, is considered essential for this role.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Welding certifications are considered a strong asset.
Experience working with aluminum materials is a bonus.
Experience welding stainless steel and structural components is an advantage.
Familiarity with industrial fabrication environments and large custom assemblies.
Comfort working with overhead cranes and coordinating with machining operations.

Work Environment
The role is based in a heavy fabrication shop that supports large, custom industrial assemblies. The facility includes open fabrication bays, welding stations, material preparation and cutting areas, and operates in close coordination with machining operations. Fitters and welders work with large steel components using overhead cranes and rigging equipment, and are expected to read drawings, perform accurate fit-up, and weld to specification in a fast-paced industrial setting. The work environment emphasizes strict safety and quality standards, with a focus on proper material handling and safe operation of welding and cutting equipment. The position follows a day shift schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the potential to start at 6:00 a.m. once training is complete. Dress typically aligns with industrial fabrication work, including appropriate protective clothing and personal protective equipment suitable for welding, grinding, and working around heavy machinery.
