Temporary (Up to 6 Months) | Full time
On Site | Starting at $37.15/hour
Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Water Treatment Plant Operator and play a vital role in protecting public health and supporting essential municipal infrastructure. In this position, you will help ensure the safe, efficient operation of equipment used in the production and distribution of the community's water supply, while also supporting the treatment of process waste before it is returned to the river. This is an opportunity for a skilled and safety-focused operator to apply sound judgment, respond quickly in critical situations, and contribute to maintaining water quality standards that meet all applicable federal and provincial regulations.
Your key responsibilities
Safely operate equipment associated with the Water Treatment Plant and performs daily and routine maintenance .
Monitor and adjust treatment processes and equipment to maintain drinking water quality exceeds regulatory requirements.
Troubleshoot and take corrective actions to prevent or limit plant upsets.
Continuously monitor and calibrate equipment, and perform troubleshooting during plant upsets.
Maintain accurate records and assist in training new operators and plant staff.
Perform sampling and laboratory tests, as well as batching, mixing and handling chemicals.
Respond to emergency after hours call outs when required.
What you bring
Sound knowledge of current practices, materials, tools/equipment and methods used in Water Treatment Plant operations, laboratory and maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to complete accurate records of operations and maintenance performed, as well as other records necessary to ensure Alberta Environmental and Protected Areas Approval and plant process requirements are being met.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to ensure administrative and maintenance personnel are kept informed regarding the plants' operational and mechanical status.
Sound knowledge of plant heating, ventilation, electrical and instrumentation / control, process, mechanical and SCADA systems.
Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office and Hach WIMS would be an asset
Qualifications
Possess Grade 12 with advanced Math 30 and Chemistry 30.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Level 3 Alberta Environment Water Treatment Certificate.
Must hold a valid Standard First Aid Certificate and WHMIS certification.
Valid Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.
This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen which includes testing for cannabis use.
