The Animal Care Technician provides humane care for research animals within the Cross Cancer Institute Vivarium, ensuring compliance with Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines and institutional standards. This role is essential to supporting Cancer Care Alberta’s research programs by maintaining high standards of animal welfare, facility operations, and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include daily animal husbandry activities such as feeding, watering, health monitoring, cage changing, and maintaining a clean and sanitized environment through cleaning, disinfection, cage washing, and equipment sterilization. The incumbent also provides technical support to Principal Investigators, research staff, and students by assisting with laboratory animal procedures, delivering training, and contributing to the optimization of research methodologies. The position is responsible for maintaining accurate records related to animal health, breeding colonies, census data, and the use of transgenic and gene knockout mouse strains using specialized database systems.
