The company primarily serves residential customers, businesses, nonprofits, and public-sector organizations through community solar programs that provide access to renewable energy without requiring in‑office solar installations.
Overview
The Director of Tax will play a pivotal role in leading the tax strategy, tax structuring for acquisitions, tax equity partnerships and is responsible for compliance with all tax reporting requirements. The position is located in Toronto, Canada (with flexibility for remote in US) and reports directly to the CFO. This role will cross‑functionally across all business units to ensure that the company optimizes tax attributed and maintains compliance with lenders, investors and partner.
Key ResponsibilitiesTax Strategy and Planning
Develop and implement comprehensive tax strategies that align with the company's business goals and optimize tax positions.
Identify tax savings opportunities and mitigate tax risks through proactive planning and analysis.
Provide strategic tax advice on mergers, acquisitions, and other business transactions.
Tax Compliance and Reporting
Oversee the preparation and filing of all tax returns, ensuring compliance with local, state, federal, and international tax laws.
Manage the timely and accurate preparation of all tax‑related financial reports, including quarterly and annual tax provisions as well as HLBV calculations.
Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of current tax laws and regulations including Investment Tax Credits and Tax Equity Structures.
Leadership
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including finance, legal, and operations, to ensure alignment on tax‑related matters.
Represent the company in tax audits, negotiations, and other tax‑related discussions with external authorities.
Financial Analysis and Reporting
Conduct detailed financial analysis to support tax planning and decision‑making processes.
Prepare and present tax‑related reports to senior management and the board of directors.
Monitor and report on key tax metrics, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
Regulatory Compliance
Stay informed of new and changing tax laws, regulations, and industry trends that may impact the company.
Ensure the company’s tax practices are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Develop and implement internal controls and procedures to maintain tax compliance.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or advanced degree (e.g., MST, JD, LLM) preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive tax experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably within the renewable energy or solar industry.
In‑depth knowledge of federal, state, and international tax laws and regulations.
Proven experience in tax planning, compliance, and strategy development.
