Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Skilled Construction Laborer – Civil Underground Utilities Job Description This role supports pipe layers on civil construction projects focused on installing, repairing, and maintaining underground piping systems for water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure. You work hands-on on active construction sites, performing physically demanding tasks that require strong attention to detail, safe work practices, and effective teamwork. Responsibilities Install underground piping systems, including storm, sanitary, and water mains, in accordance with project specifications and grade requirements. Read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes to understand layout and installation requirements. Align and position pipes to the required depth and grade using lasers or transit levels. Perform trench preparation, including measuring, grading, and compacting to ensure proper pipe installation conditions. Connect pipe components such as PVC, concrete, HDPE, and ductile iron using appropriate methods and tools. Assist with excavation activities, including digging, trenching, and preparing work areas. Support backfilling and compaction processes after pipe installation to meet project and safety standards. Ensure proper bedding, anchoring, and sealing of pipe systems to maintain integrity and performance. Inspect pipes and connections for defects or damage and verify compliance with quality standards. Maintain tools, equipment, and machinery in safe, clean, and working condition. Follow all safety policies, procedures, and site regulations at all times. Work collaboratively with equipment operators, laborers, and foremen to complete tasks efficiently. Adapt to changing site conditions and project requirements while maintaining productivity and safety. Essential Skills At least 2 years of civil construction labor experience. At least 2 years of machine operating experience with skid steer equipment. Hands-on experience installing utilities in a civil construction environment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes. Proficiency in aligning and positioning pipes using lasers or transit levels. Knowledge of underground piping systems for storm, sanitary, and water mains. Experience working with pipe materials such as PVC, concrete, HDPE, and ductile iron. Strong understanding of trench preparation, grading, and compaction practices. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including frequent lifting of heavy materials (up to 50 lbs or more). Commitment to following safety policies and regulations on active construction sites. Valid driver’s license. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with underground utilities, including water, sewer, and drainage systems. Familiarity with civil construction practices and procedures. Willingness to participate in training such as fall protection, confined space, and WHMIS. Strong teamwork and communication skills in a field construction environment. Work Environment This is an outdoor civil construction role based primarily in the Horseshoe Bay to Langley and Greater Vancouver areas. You work Monday to Friday, with a minimum of 8 hours per day, typically on a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including a 30-minute paid break. The work takes place on active construction sites in various weather conditions and involves frequent lifting of heavy materials (up to 50 lbs or more), trench work, and operating or working around heavy equipment. There is potential for overtime, weekend work, and early morning starts depending on project needs. The environment is hands-on, safety-focused, and fast-paced, requiring appropriate construction attire suitable for outdoor, physical work.
