Job Title: Skilled Laborer
Job Description
The Skilled Laborer supports vessel drydocking and shipyard operations by assisting with docking and undocking vessels, maintaining and cleaning equipment, and performing a wide range of general labor tasks. This role works closely with the yard team to keep the shipyard safe, organized, and efficient while handling tools, equipment, and materials in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Responsibilities
Assist with docking and undocking vessels as part of the drydocking ground crew, including helping move straps, removing boats from the water, and supporting rigging activities with the crane.
Operate an outdoor forklift to move equipment, materials, stands, and totes safely around the yard under direction from the travel lift supervisor and operator.
Work in confined spaces inside vessels and structures as required for cleaning, maintenance, and repair support.
Perform grinding on vessels, including bending, reaching, climbing, and working under and over parts of the vessel to support repair and maintenance work.
Carry out general shipyard maintenance such as washing, painting, and cleaning tools, equipment, and work areas.
Chip and scale rust from vessels and equipment to prepare surfaces for repair or painting.
Use hand and power tools, including grinders and drills, to support maintenance, repair, and fabrication tasks.
Follow established procedures for tool maintenance, testing, and repairs to ensure safe and reliable operation of equipment.
Keep the shipyard, work stalls, and equipment neat, organized, and free of unnecessary debris to maintain a safe work environment.
Support general yard operations by moving stands, assisting with vessel blocking, and performing manual labor tasks as directed.
Assist with equipment maintenance and basic mechanical tasks, drawing on mechanical aptitude to identify and address minor issues.
Work safely at heights up to approximately 25 feet when required for vessel repair or maintenance tasks.
Communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing, to follow instructions, understand safety procedures, and complete required documentation.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, rain, sub-freezing temperatures, heat, and wind, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.
Lift and handle heavy tools and materials, including blocks and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, using proper lifting techniques.
Participate in cross-training opportunities to learn basic welding, grinding, painting, and other functions at the facility as required.
Support occasional travel to off-site locations for work assignments when needed.
Work independently in a busy environment while maintaining a positive team attitude and supporting coworkers as needed.
Essential Skills
1–2 years of experience using hand and power tools, specifically grinders and drills, in a maintenance, construction, or industrial environment.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, rain, sub-freezing temperatures, heat, and wind.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs safely and repeatedly, including heavy tools and blocks.
Experience operating an outdoor forklift; a valid forklift ticket is considered an asset.
Strong English reading, writing, and verbal communication skills to follow instructions and safety procedures.
Comfort working in a shipyard or industrial environment with exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and varying conditions.
Ability to work in confined spaces for entry and monitoring tasks, not just awareness, when required.
Demonstrated strong safety mindset and commitment to following safety protocols and procedures.
Quality-oriented approach with attention to detail in cleaning, grinding, maintenance, and repair support.
Strong problem-solving abilities and mechanical aptitude for basic equipment maintenance and repair.
Reliability, responsibility, and the ability to work independently in a busy environment while contributing to a team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Welding experience in an industrial, marine, or fabrication environment.
Fitting experience related to vessel, structural, or mechanical fitting.
Rigging experience supporting lifting operations with cranes or other lifting equipment.
SDCB forklift certification or equivalent forklift class 3 or 4 license.
Experience in shipyard, boat building, or ship repair environments.
Experience in maintenance, repair, equipment maintenance, or equipment repair.
Experience working in drydock operations or vessel maintenance.
Familiarity with hand tools such as chipping hammers and other basic trade tools.
Positive team attitude with a willingness to learn and cross-train in areas such as welding, grinding, and painting.
Ability to adapt to changing tasks and priorities in a dynamic yard environment.
Why Work Here?
You will join a hands-on, team-oriented shipyard environment that values safety, learning, and long-term growth. The organization offers opportunities for advancement and training, including the potential to move into welding after demonstrating strong performance over time. You can access extended benefits and retirement savings support through RRSP matching after your first year. The team culture includes regular appreciation initiatives such as pizza lunches, food truck visits, prize giveaways, and an annual fishing trip with meals and lodging covered. Practical perks such as free on-site parking, provided coveralls, and access to tools like grinders are included, along with the possibility of earning items such as a leather jacket and welding helmet.
Work Environment
The role is based in a marine shipyard and boat repair yard that services vessels such as fish boats, tugboats, barges, and custom float structures. Work takes place both indoors in confined spaces and outdoors across the yard, with exposure to all weather conditions including rain, snow, heat, wind, and sub-freezing temperatures. Some tasks may be performed at heights of up to approximately 25 feet and require reaching, bending, lifting, and climbing under and over vessel structures. You will work around heavy equipment such as forklifts, travel lifts, cranes, and various hand and power tools including grinders and drills. The standard shift runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with overtime possible based on operational needs, and occasional travel to off-site locations may be required. The dress code includes steel-toed safety boots and appropriate personal protective equipment; safety glasses or goggles are provided, and a welding helmet may be used when performing occasional welding.
