Job Title: Sit-Down Forklift Operator
Job Description
The Sit-Down Forklift Operator works in a high-volume LTL freight cross-dock environment, safely operating a sit-down counterbalance forklift to load and unload trailers, move pallets, and support shipping and receiving activities. This role combines forklift operation with manual material handling, paperwork, and general dock duties, requiring strong attention to safety, adaptability, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced setting.
Responsibilities
Operate a sit-down counterbalance forklift safely and efficiently throughout the shift.
Load and unload LTL freight trailers using a sit-down counterbalance forklift
Move pallets and freight across the cross-dock area, ensuring accurate placement and efficient flow of goods.
Perform manual material handling (“hand bombing”) of products weighing up to 50 lbs
Handle bills of lading and related shipping and receiving paperwork accurately during the shift.
Assist team members with unloading paperwork and documentation to ensure shipments are processed correctly.
Support general dock operations, including swamping, sorting, and staging freight for outbound shipments.
Help clean and maintain the dock and yard areas, including removing debris and keeping work areas clear to support a safe work environment.
Participate in end-of-shift cleaning to ensure the dock remains organized and free of hazards.
Adapt to changing priorities and switch between forklift operation, manual handling, and paperwork as needed.
Follow all safety procedures, equipment guidelines, and cross-dock operating standards at all times.
Collaborate with a team of dockworkers and forklift operators to meet productivity and service targets.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of experience operating a sit-down counterbalance forklift in a warehouse, transportation, distribution, 3PL, LTL, or cross-dock environment.
At least 1 year of experience loading and unloading trailers using a sit-down forklift.
Proven experience in transportation, warehouse, or distribution operations, ideally within 3PL, freight, or LTL settings.
Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the shift.
Valid forklift ticket (in-house or private); if expired or missing, willingness to complete forklift ticketing prior to starting.
Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with frequent task switching.
Strong attention to safety when operating forklifts and working on a busy dock.
Ability to handle shipping documents such as bills of lading and related paperwork accurately.
Reliable teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with a dock team of multiple operators and dockworkers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Previous experience in a cross-dock, shipping and receiving, or freight-handling environment.
Experience working with LTL freight and courier shipments for retail distribution.
Safety vest available for personal use on the dock (strongly recommended).
Leadership experience or the ability to take initiative and support team coordination.
RF scanner experience for tracking and processing freight.
Experience working with waybills and bills of lading in a transportation or warehouse setting.
Strong adaptability to work in tight spaces around multiple bay doors and forklifts.
Comfort working evening or overnight hours on a third-shift schedule.
Work Environment
This role is based in a very fast-paced LTL freight cross-dock facility handling courier shipments for retail stores. Trucks arrive with pallets from distributors, which are unloaded, sorted, and repacked for retail distribution in a relatively small and busy dock area.

Monday to Friday, from 5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m
