The Opportunity
A reputable boutique litigation firm with approximately 12 lawyers and more than 25 team members is seeking an experienced Commercial Litigation Lawyer to join its growing practice.
The successful candidate will act for sophisticated and high-net-worth clients in complex corporate and commercial disputes. This is a senior, autonomous position offering the opportunity to lead files, manage a small legal team and work directly with the managing partner on select matters. The firm is organized into three collaborative teams. The incoming lawyer will lead their own team, supported by a junior lawyer and a dedicated legal assistant, while benefiting from an approachable, open-door environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assume carriage of complex corporate and commercial litigation files from inception through resolution
Represent clients before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal and other courts and tribunals, as required
Develop litigation strategies and provide practical, commercially focused advice
Draft pleadings, motions, affidavits, facta, legal opinions and other litigation materials
Conduct legal research and analyze complex factual and legal issues
Prepare for and attend discoveries, motions, mediations, arbitrations and trials
Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, experts and other stakeholders
Delegate and supervise work completed by a junior lawyer and legal assistant
Support other members of the litigation team on matters of varying complexity and sensitivity
Build strong, trusted relationships with clients and colleagues
Contribute to the continued growth and development of the firm’s litigation practice
Qualifications
Licensed and in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
Minimum five years of corporate and commercial litigation experience
Experience involving financial fraud, class actions or other complex commercial disputes is considered a strong asset
Demonstrated ability to independently manage files and make sound strategic decisions
Strong legal research, analytical, drafting and advocacy skills
Experience appearing before Ontario courts and participating in discoveries, mediations, arbitrations and trials
Ability to prioritize competing matters and adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment
Excellent attention to detail, judgment and work ethic
Ethical, empathetic and client-focused approach
Collaborative attitude and the ability to lead and support a small legal team
The firm is primarily focused on the depth and relevance of a candidate’s litigation experience and does not require a particular law school or educational background.
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive base salary based on the successful candidate’s experience and expectations
Discretionary bonus tied to hours and collections, subject to the firm’s applicable collection-rate requirements
Low annual billable target of 1,250 hours
Four weeks of vacation
Three-month probationary period

Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position requiring attendance in the office four days per week, with the option to work remotely one day per week.
