Job Summary
The Senior Hardware Designer is fully competent in digital and analog hardware design and typically fulfills the role of Hardware Technical Lead on project teams developing building automation and control products.
This role is responsible for the design, prototyping, research, validation, and documentation of new and existing hardware with minimal supervision. The Senior Hardware Designer is expected to design hardware with reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory compliance in mind, and to collaborate closely with firmware, compliance, and manufacturing teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
Product Development & Technical Leadership
Develop hardware designs in accordance with established procedures and the Product Development Process (PDP)
Provide technical leadership on hardware projects, including design planning and scheduling
Provide technical guidance and design oversight to other hardware designers
Assist in the collection and clarification of product and system requirements
Identify technical risks and contribute to mitigation strategies
Perform cost analysis and support cost-reduction initiatives
Review and approve key hardware development milestones
Research and Design
Research new technologies relevant to building automation and control product directions
Perform technical analysis of proposed designs
Capture designs in schematics and produce PCB layouts
Liaise with mechanical designers to ensure physical and environmental requirements are met
Design with consideration for system power requirements, thermal performance, and component lifecycle
Ensure component selection follows established standards and best practices
Generate accurate documentation for products and variants including addition to and ongoing maintenance in PLM
Quality, Testing, and System Integration
Perform preliminary product testing and support board bring-up
Create test plans for new hardware designs
Assist in the development of quality and verification test procedures
Ensure designs are reviewed by qualified hardware or QA specialists
Review work produced by other hardware designers
Analyze product failures and contribute to root-cause analysis
Collaborate with firmware developers during system integration and debugging
Firmware Exposure (Minor)
General understanding of embedded firmware concepts and hardware/firmware interfaces
Ability to read or make minor modifications to firmware for testing or debugging
Collaborate with firmware teams to define hardware interfaces and requirements
This role does not require primary firmware development ownership
Compliance & Regulatory Exposure
Design hardware with regulatory and safety requirements in mind
Support certification and compliance testing, primarily UL and CE
Apply best practices for safety, isolation, creepage/clearance, grounding, EMC, and ESD
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong understanding of mixed-signal, analog, and digital circuit design, including printed circuit design
Strong technical communications and writing skills
Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively
Able to work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision
Proficiency with EDA software (Altium Designer experience preferred)
Experience with microcontrollers/microprocessors and peripheral interfaces
Experience designing multilayer PCBs
Hands-on experience debugging hardware in a lab environment
Basic embedded C/C++ familiarity
Ability to collaborate across firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and compliance teams
Nice to Have
Registered as either P.Eng. or E.I.T.
Experience with industrial or building automation products
Exposure to EMC standards commonly used in industrial environments (e.g., EN 61000 series)
Experience supporting products through certification and production
Required Qualifications
Technology Diploma in Electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience
8+ years of experience in electronic hardware design

95,000 - 125,000 CAD
This range reflects the minimum and maximum target payable for the base salary of new hires across all Canadian locations. Actual compensation may vary outside this range and is dependent on various factors.
