Our dynamic environment, filled with high-achieving professionals, enables our staff to take on incredible opportunities, gain mentorship from a diverse group of colleagues, and succeed in their careers.
The successful candidate will provide senior-level geotechnical engineering leadership for an underground hard rock mine development project in Northwestern Ontario. This position will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day ground control activities, evaluating underground conditions, ensuring compliance with ground support standards, and supporting the safe advancement of underground decline development.
Working closely with technical services, underground operations, contractors, and external engineering consultants, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will provide practical, field-based engineering guidance while maintaining effective ground control practices and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
Lead day-to-day geotechnical engineering and ground control activities supporting underground mine development.
Conduct routine underground inspections to assess ground conditions, identify geotechnical hazards, and recommend appropriate ground support measures.
Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) inspections on ground support installations, including resin rebar, split sets, mesh, cable bolts, and shotcrete.
Review existing ground support standards, identify gaps, and recommend improvements to ensure safe and effective underground development.
Develop, implement, and maintain the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 854.
Establish and maintain Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) to support geotechnical risk management and operational decision-making.
Assess cable bolt installation, grouting, curing, and testing requirements, including re-entry and re-blast criteria.
Review proposed underground headings, decline development, and excavation plans to assess ground conditions and support requirements before development proceeds.
Conduct rock mass classification, face mapping, and geotechnical assessments to support ground control decisions.
Provide technical guidance to underground supervisors, geologists, contractors, and operational personnel on ground control practices and geotechnical hazards.
Coordinate with external geotechnical consultants on engineering design reviews, technical recommendations, and required approvals.
Monitor ground support performance and recommend corrective actions when conditions differ from design assumptions.
Support the development and implementation of geotechnical inspection procedures, QA/QC programs, and reporting systems.
Deliver ground control training and mentorship to geologists, supervisors, and underground personnel.
Participate in daily underground development planning and contractor coordination meetings.
Prepare weekly geotechnical reports documenting underground conditions, inspections, identified risks, corrective actions, and recommendations.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and provide detailed handovers to ensure continuity of geotechnical oversight between rotations.
Promote a strong safety culture and ensure geotechnical activities comply with applicable legislation, site procedures, and industry best practices.
Compensation ranges from $120,000 to $155,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or eligibility is an asset.
Significant experience in operational underground hard rock geotechnical engineering, preferably in a senior or site-lead capacity.
Demonstrated ability to independently assess underground ground conditions and make practical ground control decisions in an active mining environment.
Experience developing and implementing Ground Control Management Plans, Trigger Action Response Plans, and geotechnical QA/QC programs.
Strong knowledge of underground ground support systems, including resin rebar, split sets, mesh, cable bolts, and shotcrete.
Experience supporting mechanized underground development, including decline and ramp development.
Familiarity with Ontario Regulation 854 and applicable underground mining health and safety requirements.
Experience with rock mass classification, geological face mapping, and ground support design principles.
Knowledge of cable bolt installation, grouting, curing, testing, and associated re-entry requirements.
Ability to review geotechnical designs, identify operational risks, and coordinate technical approvals with external engineering consultants.
Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with underground operations and contractor teams.
Experience coaching and mentoring technical and operational personnel.
