Financial Analyst, Canadian Banking Controllership
Job Description
The Sr. Financial Analyst, Canadian Banking Controllership supports Canadian Commercial and Corporate Banking business units and ensures the integrity of financial and management information used for reporting and business analysis. As a key member of the Finance Controllership team, this role is accountable for the accuracy of loan ledgers and the amounts reported in financial reporting systems. The Sr. Financial Analyst oversees loan accounting advisory, investigates accounting and process issues, manages reconciliations, and supports month-end close activities and ad hoc financial requests.
Responsibilities
Ensure the integrity and accuracy of loan ledgers and related balances reported in financial reporting systems.
Execute detailed loan contract accounting reviews to eliminate existing backlogs and maintain up-to-date records.
Perform financial analysis, including investigation and explanation of results, variances, and trends for Canadian Commercial and Corporate Banking units.
Provide loan accounting advisory support, including fee recognition, accruals, and other loan-related accounting treatments.
Investigate accounting issues and process anomalies, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare, review, and post journal entries related to lending and loan accounting activities.
Perform and review bank reconciliations and other key balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Support the preparation and review of financial statements and management reports, ensuring consistency with general ledger data.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of actuals versus budget for relevant business units.
Support month-end close activities, including reconciliations, variance analysis, and resolution of accounting issues within tight timelines.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders across Finance, Controllership, and business units to resolve accounting and reporting questions.
Utilize Excel (including formulas, VBA, and macros) and AI tools to analyze large data sets, streamline processes, and enhance reporting efficiency.
Respond to ad hoc financial and accounting requests that arise during the month and at month-end.
Contribute to continuous improvement of accounting processes, controls, and reporting quality within the controllership function.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5+ years of relevant work experience with financial services institutions.
Strong accounting knowledge with hands-on experience in loan accounting and general ledger activities.
Proficiency in Excel, including advanced formulas, VBA, and macros, to manage and analyze large volumes of data.
Familiarity with AI tools used to support financial analysis and process efficiency.
Proven ability to investigate accounting issues and process discrepancies and provide clear, well-supported resolutions.
Strong experience with reconciliations, including bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations.
Experience with month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and variance analysis.
Solid understanding of financial reporting, financial statements, and management reporting.
High attention to detail and accuracy, especially when working with large data sets and complex loan information.
Experience in finance or accounting with practical experience in loan, lending, and fee recognition processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Understanding or experience with lending products, including terms and conditions, interest calculations, and fee structures.
Understanding or experience with general ledger applications such as SAP or Oracle.
Current professional accounting accreditation (CPA or equivalent such as ACCA or CA) with strong knowledge of IFRS accounting standards preferred.
Knowledge of ACBS or similar loan administration and accounting systems.
Experience working with budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of actuals versus budget in a financial services context.
Ability to work effectively with large volumes of financial and loan data while maintaining data integrity.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to explain financial results and variances to stakeholders.
Work Environment
This role operates within a controllership and finance environment supporting Canadian Commercial and Corporate Banking business units. The position follows a hybrid work model, with 2–3 days per week in the office (typically Monday, Tuesday, and one floating day) and the remainder working remotely. The standard work schedule is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The team uses general ledger and financial reporting systems, including SAP or Oracle, as well as Excel (with VBA and macros), AI tools, and loan-related systems such as ACBS. The environment is professional, deadline-driven, and collaborative, with opportunities for contract extension or conversion to a full-time role based on performance and business needs.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $46.00 - $48.00/hr.
