As a
Senior Estimator
, you will be responsible for analyzing costs and preparing estimates for a variety of construction projects, including civil engineering, architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical scopes. This role will lead bid preparation on larger projects and manage multiple smaller bids while providing guidance and mentorship to junior estimating staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating & Bid Management
Lead and manage the full-cycle bid process for large-scale projects or oversee multiple smaller bids simultaneously.
Review project specifications, drawings, and tender documents to develop accurate and competitive estimates.
Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and ensure alignment with contract requirements and project specifications.
Coordinate pricing efforts with estimating team members to maximize bulk purchasing opportunities and cost efficiencies.
Manage bid day activities, including collecting subcontractor and supplier quotations, analyzing bid recaps, and distributing bid documents.
Ensure all pricing aligns with client requirements, project objectives, and overall bid strategy.
Apply research and market analysis to identify project-specific pricing for labour, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
Project Analysis & Risk Management
Conduct detailed reviews of specifications, drawings, and contract documents to identify project risks and opportunities.
Evaluate project requirements and develop innovative, value-driven pricing solutions.
Identify and communicate potential risks associated with project and contract documents.
Monitor and resolve issues, questions, and Requests for Information (RFIs) throughout the bid process.
Relationship Management
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Collaborate with trade partners to ensure accurate scope coverage and competitive pricing.
Support the company's reputation by promoting professionalism and responsiveness throughout the estimating process.
Leadership & Team Development
Oversee and mentor junior estimators, providing guidance throughout the estimating and bid preparation process.
Foster a collaborative and learning-focused environment within the estimating team.
Review estimates, take-offs, and bid documentation prepared by team members to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Act as a role model by sharing industry knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
Engineering Degree or College Diploma in a construction-related discipline.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive construction estimating experience with a General Contractor.
Demonstrated ability to lead estimates valued up to $50 million or manage multiple concurrent smaller bids.
Experience estimating commercial and civil construction projects.
Experience preparing estimates for Construction Management (CM) and Design-Build (DB) projects.
Familiarity with various project delivery methods, including:
Lump Sum (LS)
Construction Management (CM)
Design-Build (DB)
Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency with MS Office.
Ability to learn and maintain proficiency in estimating and project management software.
Strong understanding of construction methods, procedures, specifications, and industry practices.
Knowledge of quantity take-off procedures, subcontractor procurement, pricing strategies, and bid closing processes.
