Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) is the provinces not-for-profit provider of security, safety, training, and identification services. Winner of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce Not-For-Profit of the Year, we are an independent member of Commissionaires Canada, our parent federation employing over 22,000 nationwide. THE ROLE
Position: Security Guard - Springhill
Competition Number: CNS 2026-05-15
Reports to: Site Supervisor
Rate of Pay: $21.27 per hour. Scale of compensation is variable, and reflective of site contracts. Please note, some of our sites are unionized work environments.
Working Hours: On-Call position 812-hour shifts, various hours/days of the week.
Duties & Responsibilities
While duties vary by assignment, the responsibilities of this role may include, but are not limited to:
Protecting personnel, property, assets, and confidential information
Conducting routine foot patrols and perimeter inspections, both indoors and outdoors
Escorting contractors and visitors through secured areas and facilities
Reporting incidents, concerns, and operational updates to the Site Supervisor
Preparing accurate and detailed incident and daily activity reports
Monitoring, operating, and responding to security alarms and surveillance systems
Maintaining a safe and secure work environment while promoting health and safety practices
Adhering to all CNS Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality policies, procedures, and standards, as well as those of client sites
Following all CNS policies, Site Work Instructions, and directions provided by supervisors
Performing additional duties as required, including patrol operations, reception and administrative support, access control, emergency response, and incident management
Contractor escorting through various facilities

Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
Be aged 19 or older;
Be eligible to work In Canada
Not have a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted;
Be able to provide fingerprints and complete a criminal record check;
Be eligible to apply for Government of Canada personnel security screening;
Be able to communicate effectively in English (the ability to work in both official languages would be considered an asset).

attitude. Both physical and mental fitness is required. This often involves working in all types of environmental conditions at varying times throughout the day or night.

Mental alertness with an ability to:
- react calmly, quickly, and appropriately in any crisis
- concentrate and remain alert for up to 12 hours
- communicate observed characteristics/behaviours (good memory)
- demonstrate problem-solving and sound judgement
Physical fitness with an ability to:
- climb multiple flights of stairs with ease
- navigate uneven terrain during foot patrols (in all weather conditions)
- display good dexterity and balance
-Stand for extended durations
- rely on all senses in assessing changes to the work environment
Superior attention to detail with very good verbal communication skills
Excellent customer service skills
Computer literacy, and/or an aptitude to learn is an asset
Achievement of First Aid certification
Successful completion of the Commissionaires Security Officer Course (online and/or in-class)
Although not required to apply, the following attributes are considered assets:
Use of Force Certified
Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trained
Valid Nova Scotia's Driver's License, or reliable transportation to/from the worksites
Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
