Job Summary
The Safety Officer is responsible for leading and advancing Health & Safety (H&S) performance across both Autoport (automotive logistics operations) and International Bulk Services (bulk transloading operations). The role supports diverse industrial environments, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, strengthening safety culture, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across all locations.
The Safety Officer serves as a key H&S resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing daily coaching, guidance, and support to operational leadership and frontline employees. The role is accountable for implementing safety programs, leading incident investigations, ensuring reporting integrity, and partnering with internal stakeholders and external regulators.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Execution
Implement and monitor safety programs across automotive terminals and transload facilities
Deliver and support H&S training in collaboration with operational leaders
Lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions
Track and ensure completion of corrective and preventative measures
Support development and execution of short- and long-term H&S improvement plans
Provide coaching and guidance to leaders and frontline employees to strengthen safety culture
Compliance & Governance
Ensure compliance with federal and provincial H&S regulations and company standards
Develop and maintain safe work practices, policies, and procedures
Conduct inspections, audits, and recurring compliance activities
Interface with regulatory agencies on compliance-related matters
Support and coach Joint Health & Safety Committees
Identify and address compliance gaps
Performance & Continuous Improvement
Analyze safety data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
Develop and report on key safety performance indicators (KPIs)
Maintain accuracy and integrity of safety data and systems (e.g., SAP)
Update H&S documentation, manuals, and procedures
Conduct field audits and support implementation of improvements
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across both business units
Working Conditions
Combination of office and field-based work in active automotive terminals and bulk transload facilities
Regular exposure to outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
Flexible work schedule, including availability for evenings and weekends as required
On-call availability to respond to critical incidents (24/7)
Travel required (approximately 2030%) across Canada and the United States
Experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in health and safety or a related field
Experience in industrial or operational environments (automotive, bulk commodities, manufacturing, or transportation)
Strong knowledge of industrial safety practices, including exposure to chemical hazards and process safety management
Experience in incident investigation, emergency response, and safety program implementation
Experience with project management and leading safety initiatives
Familiarity with railroad operations is considered an asset
Education / Certification
Bachelors degree or certificate in Health & Safety or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Professional safety designations such as CRSP, CSP, or ASP (or working toward certification) preferred
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
Skills / Functional Knowledge
Strong knowledge of industrial, automotive, and rail safety practices
Expertise in root cause investigation methodologies and incident analysis
Strong understanding of behavioural safety and leadership principles
Knowledge of job safety analysis and risk assessment techniques
Solid understanding of federal and provincial health and safety regulations
Strong analytical, auditing, and reporting capabilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and safety management systems (e.g., SAP)
Excellent communication, coaching, and influencing skills
Bilingual (English and French) is an asset
