Overview
The RN in the Child & Youth Program is responsible for the provision of comprehensive child and adolescent Mental Health nursing care within a interdisciplinary team. Duties include assessment of children and adolescents and their families, treatment and discharge planning. The RN may also be required to work in other mental health services and programs, based on operational needs.
Education
- Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- BScN preferred.
- BCLS required.
- Completion of, or working towards, the CNA Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Certificate.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificate.
- Knowledge of principles of CBT and DBT an asset.
- Applicants with certification and/or completed additional training related to Mental Health will be given priority.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 1 year of recent Mental Health Nursing experience: either Inpatient, Outpatient, Community-Based, or a combination required.
- A minimum of 1 year experience working with children and youth in a mental health setting. Preference given to mental health setting in an acute care facility.
- Demonstrated excellence in both psychiatric and medical nursing diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and evaluation processes.
- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act/Mental Health Reform.
- Ability to articulate clearly the philosophy of client centered care, recovery, trauma-informed and strength-based and harm reduction strategies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of counselling and therapeutic techniques.
- Excellent understanding of psychotropic medication.
- Demonstrated excellence in the Assessment of Mental Status, including Suicide Risk Assessments.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well within an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Must be willing to work in all areas of the Health Service (skills & abilities considered).
- Commitment to on-going professional development and/or education.
- A demonstrated willingness to be flexible and work all shifts as required.
- Computer competency required.
- Maintains competence relative to current practice.
- Good work and attendance record required
