JOB SUMMARY
As part of the interdisciplinary team at the T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care, responsible to develop, coordinate, implement, promote, and evaluate a diversified program of resident-focused recreational activities for residents/clients based on and responsive to their abilities, strengths, needs, interests, and former lifestyles. Works according to all applicable standards, acts and governing bodies.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Diploma or Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies or Therapeutic Recreation
Completed courses in special populations and therapeutic recreation
Certificate in Dementia Care (or equivalent certificate course) from a recognized community college
Valid First Aid certification
Safe Food Handling preferred
Certification in SAM S.T.E.P.S model of exercise preferred.
Proof of training/certification within the past 2 years preferred in: U-first, PIECES, GPA, DementiAbility, and Positive Approaches to Care
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 6 - 9 months current experience in the recreation field working with dementia populations, and with residents/clients exhibiting behaviours, preferably in a long-term care or community geriatric setting
Knowledge of community resources
Knowledge of and experience with Dementia Care and dealing with responsive behaviours preferred
Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices
A strong background in long-term care, community consultation and geriatric mental health
Experience in creating therapeutic care plans and progress notes
DOS charting knowledge, including how to use the patterns to create a recreation intervention care plan
Excellent theoretical knowledge and practiced skills in dementia care (specific to GPA techniques, DementiAbility strategies, using The PIECES model of care and Positive Approach to care strategies and therapeutic recreation)
SKILLS
Commitment to client/family centred care and compassion for the client/family/population being served
Ability to advocate (to families, other staff, other departments) for best practice when dealing with responsive behaviours
Demonstrated leadership, collaboration and organizational skills
Demonstrated adaptive communication skills
Excellent computer knowledge and skill, e.g. Word, Outlook
Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
Commitment to continuous learning and development
Enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change
Must have an excellent rapport with elderly people and special populations
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
Good attendance record
Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job
Shift Information
Currently scheduled 40 hours Days/Evenings shifts and may be required to work days, evenings and nights, including weekends.
