Position Summary
Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this position is responsible for supporting the safe and accessible delivery of recreation programs for the Town of Milton within the Active Living portfolio, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures, and assists the Coordinator, Recreation in the administration of programs, and staff leadership and supervision. This role is responsible for providing regular evening and weekend on-the-job training and mentorship to part-time staff, supporting program quality assurance, as well as having scheduled in-program shifts filling the program roles for which they are qualified.
Major Job Responsibilities
Actively support direct program delivery
Work scheduled in-program shifts (e.g. registered programs, drop-in programs, weight room and special events, etc.) based on the needs of the Active Living portfolio to ensure high quality and consistent program delivery
Assist with emergency shift coverage as required, based on incumbent qualifications
Respond to and mediate in-person customer questions, comments and concerns, escalating to Coordinator, Recreation when necessary
May be required to obtain additional certifications to effectively provide direct program delivery, based on program needs
Support, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate part-time program staff members
Conduct program and weight room visits, primarily during instructional program delivery and peak member usage
Conduct program and staff evaluations as required
Provide coaching and feedback to part-time program staff and volunteers during their shifts, including in-program coaching and mentorship
Assist with the design, implementation, and delivery of staff training sessions to ensure policies and procedures are communicated, quality standards are maintained, and staff are prepared for emergency response
Provide administrative support for the program team
Under the guidance of the Coordinator, Recreation, input and maintain recreation programs using recreation software (Xplor Recreation), including registered and drop-in programs
Support the onboarding of part-time program staff and volunteers, including assistance with interviews, facilitation of skill screenings, and completion of onboarding processes (e.g. references checks, certification verifications, etc.)
Support the payroll process for part-time staff by reviewing and validating shift changes, ensuring timely submissions of hours worked by staff, etc.
Assist in the development, maintenance and distribution of schedules, lesson schematics and instructor class assignments, and supply inventories
Assists with analyzing statistical information and preparation of reports to summarize findings related to program delivery results
Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications
Post-secondary diploma in Recreation & Leisure, or a related field
Minimum two (2) years working in a municipal recreation environment directly in programs within the specified portfolio
Minimum one (1) year experience overseeing staff and volunteers, and working with the public
Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification
High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification
Current personal training or fitness instructor certification in a recognized organization
May be required to obtain additional certifications to effectively provide direct program delivery, based on program needs
Excellent public relations, communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
Strong leadership and organizational skills
Experience with coaching and development of part-time staff, and ability to provide feedback for the purposes of coaching
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of products including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act
Mature judgment, diplomacy, and discretion in handling of confidential material
Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
The successful candidate is required to travel between sites. Access to transportation to travel between work locations in a timely manner is required.
In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-secondary degree in Recreation & Leisure, or a related field
Minimum two (2) years progressive supervisory experience in a municipal or recreation setting
HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Aging
Proficiency in registration software (Xplor Recreation preferred)
Strong program planning skills
