Position Information Position Title Part-Time Academic (CHIN 1031.03: Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin Chinese) Part 1, (Section 1)) - Fall 2026 Posting Number PTAP3462P Department/Unit Russian Studies Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities A part-time academic is required to teach CHIN 1031.03: Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin Chinese) Part 1 (Section 1) – Fall Term 2026 (September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026) Currently Scheduled: TR 11:35 – 12:55 (In-Person) This course aims to provide basic competence in understanding and speaking Mandarin and reading Chinese characters. It is for students who have had no exposure to Mandarin or Cantonese. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including admission, lectures, test preparation, evaluation, and electronic submission of grades. Instructors are expected to maintain reliable and constant communication with the administration of the Department, to be available for two hours per week for consultation with students, and to have students fill out the evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course. Qualifications/Requirements of Position Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese and possess a graduate degree or other academic and/or professional qualifications deemed suitable for teaching the class. Candidates should demonstrate strong teaching skills, including communicative and student-centered language teaching approaches, grammar instruction, commitment to student learning, and a strong sense of personal responsibility. Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level will be an asset.
