As a Parks Ecologist with Environment Planning and Policy, a section within Climate and Environment, you will be responsible for the conservation planning of Calgary's natural landscapes and biodiversity. Primary duties include: Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of ecology and natural areas management in City planning and policy initiatives, development application reviews and site inspections, and local area planning (e.g., Area Structure Plans, Local Area Plans). Scope, review and approve ecological inventories and impact assessments. Act as a Subject Matter Expert for natural areas and biodiversity initiatives, including representing this expertise during public engagement. Develop and implement biodiversity and natural landscape conservation standards and guidelines. Qualifications A degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field and at least 5 years of experience in ecological inventory, assessment, monitoring, restoration, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required. Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit is required. Ability to acquire, review and analyze biophysical data and provide specialized environmental expertise. Knowledge of wetland technical and regulatory requirements will be considered an asset. Experience in municipal planning and policy development, impact assessment, regulatory review, reading site plans, conservation and restoration planning, ecological health modeling, and advanced GIS skills are assets. Knowledge of local natural history, biodiversity and ecosystem processes as functions, as well as City policies will be considered assets. Current membership with Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB), Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) , or other professional designations will be considered assets. Access to a personal vehicle for business use is an asset. You will have a high degree of political sensitivity and business acumen with effective networking and negotiating skills. You possess strong project management, conflict resolution and communication skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
