Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Outdoor Forklift Operator Job Description This role involves operating large outdoor sit-down forklifts to move oversized construction materials, including lumber, long frame pieces, and roof structures, while working primarily in an outdoor yard environment. You will spend approximately 30–40% of your day on a forklift handling shipping, receiving, loading, unloading, and order picking, and the remainder performing general labor tasks that require regularly lifting 50–60 pounds when needed. Responsibilities Operate large outdoor sit-down counterbalance forklifts to move oversized construction materials such as lumber, 60-foot frame pieces, and roof structures safely and efficiently. Load trailers and organize products in the yard using RF scanners to ensure accurate inventory control and order fulfillment. Perform shipping and receiving tasks, including loading and unloading trailers and trucks with construction materials. Pick orders accurately using RF scanners and material handling equipment, ensuring the correct products are prepared for shipment. Carry out general labor duties for the portion of the shift not spent on the forklift, including manual material handling and yard organization. Lift and move materials weighing 50–60 pounds as required, maintaining safe lifting techniques and following all safety procedures. Work effectively in an outdoor environment on rough terrain, maintaining awareness of surroundings and operating safely around multiple moving forklifts. Use both sit-down and, when required, stand-up forklifts once trained and certified in-house. Follow established safety protocols, including the use of required personal protective equipment, and contribute to maintaining a clean and organized yard and facility. Collaborate with coworkers and leadership, respond positively to coaching and feedback, and contribute to a team-oriented, sports-like culture. Adapt to different tasks throughout the day based on operational needs, including material handling, order picking, and yard support. Participate in in-house forklift certification and ongoing training to upgrade forklift skills and maintain compliance with company standards. Essential Skills Minimum 1 year of outdoor sit-down forklift experience on rough terrain. Proven experience loading and unloading trailers and trucks using a sit-down forklift. Order picking experience in a material handling or warehouse environment. Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme cold in winter. Ability to perform general labor tasks and consistently lift 50–60 pounds when required. Experience using RF scanners for inventory, order picking, or shipping and receiving. Experience in shipping and receiving and forklift operating in busy yard or facility environments. Ability to work Monday to Friday on a day shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Strong teamwork mindset, being coachable, open to feedback, and able to work collaboratively with coworkers. Reliable transportation to a location that is not transit accessible. Additional Skills & Qualifications Lumber yard experience is an asset. Experience with building materials is an asset. Ability to work different shifts if required is an asset. Experience operating Sellick or Manitou brand forklifts is an advantage. Valid third-party forklift certification is an asset; expired certifications are acceptable as in-house recertification is available. Willingness to participate in in-house forklift certification and potential training at a main plant for forklift ticket upgrades. Comfort working in dusty, noisy, and busy yard environments with multiple forklifts operating simultaneously. Why Work Here? Employees benefit from a long-term, stable opportunity with a growing organization that promotes from within and offers clear paths to lead hand and supervisory roles. Once hired permanently, team members receive a comprehensive benefits package and enjoy a supportive, kind, and tenured leadership group that focuses on training and development. The culture emphasizes teamwork, coachability, and mutual support, reinforced by regular company events such as bi-weekly barbeques and additional training opportunities, including advanced forklift ticket upgrades for high performers. Work Environment The role is based in a busy, dusty, and noisy outdoor facility with approximately 60 staff members working in the yard and building, and around 18 outdoor forklifts operating continuously. Work is performed primarily outdoors on rough terrain in all weather conditions, with minimal time spent indoors. Forklifts are heated, but operators spend only about 30–40% of their shift on the equipment and will be exposed to extreme cold for much of the winter. The site is not transit accessible, so reliable transportation is required. The standard shift runs Monday to Friday, day shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Equipment includes large outdoor sit-down forklifts, RF scanners, and material handling tools, with Sellick and Manitou forklifts in use. Dress code requires appropriate outdoor attire for the weather, along with mandatory 6-inch tie-up steel toe boots and a safety vest.
