Accountabilities:
The Optical Design Engineer will support the design, characterization, testing, and sustaining of optical components throughout the product lifecycle. This role requires strong technical expertise, analytical thinking, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve product quality, reliability, and performance.
Design, characterize, and test optical hardware components to improve reliability, reduce costs, and address lifecycle challenges.
Support product sustaining activities by identifying risks, resolving technical issues, and mitigating component obsolescence.
Plan and execute laboratory experiments to evaluate optical components, transceiver modules, and engineering design changes.
Develop and implement optical testing and screening methodologies to improve manufacturing yield and validate long-term reliability.
Analyze optical, electrical, and environmental test data to verify performance, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
Provide technical expertise for hardware failure analysis, investigations, product customization efforts, and customer support activities.
Collaborate with global manufacturing teams to improve production quality and drive continuous product enhancements.
Communicate technical findings, progress updates, and recommendations to engineering teams, leadership, and external stakeholders.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate is an engineer with experience in optical systems, opto-electronic devices, and hardware testing. You should have a strong foundation in photonics principles, hands-on laboratory experience, and the ability to solve complex technical problems in a collaborative engineering environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Opto-Electronics, Photonics, or a related technical discipline.
3+ years of experience contributing to the design, characterization, manufacturing, or testing of opto-electronic devices or systems through academic research, internships, or industry projects.
Practical knowledge of optical device principles and testing methods involving lasers, amplifiers, modulators, detectors, optical subassemblies, and transceivers.
Hands-on experience using optical laboratory equipment such as Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSA), Optical Power Meters (OPM), Digital Communication Analyzers (DCA), Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), and Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA).
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate technical issues, determine root causes, and develop effective solutions.
Ability to learn new technologies quickly while managing multiple projects and shifting priorities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to share technical information with different audiences.
Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a related engineering or scientific discipline is considered an asset.
Experience with statistical analysis methods, including distributions, Cpk, and USL/LSL analysis, is a plus.
Experience automating laboratory testing or scripting with Python, MATLAB, Tcl, or similar tools is an advantage.
Knowledge of Passive Optical Networking (PON), optical communication standards, or transceiver technologies is beneficial.
