Nurse Leader - 2026/2027
Description:
The Nurse Leader is responsible for supervising and implementing the provisions of the Nursing Services Department in the Burlington Public Schools in accordance with State and Federal regulations and mandates. The Nurse Leader will work with the School Physician, who serves as a consultant. On a day-to-day basis, the Nurse Leader will work with the educational leaders of the Burlington Public Schools to ensure that the health needs of all students are met.
Responsibilities:
Participates in the recruitment and selection of school nurses.
Supervises & evaluates school nurses and support staff.
Supervises and coordinates health service programs for students in compliance with statutes and regulations.
Collaborates with public and private agencies, organizations, and professional personnel in securing and providing school health services for students.
Prepares and/or reviews all local, state, and federal reports on health/medical issues.
Interprets the philosophy and practices of the nursing department for parents, administrators, staff, and the public.
Provides consultation and advice to administrators to ensure a safe and healthy school environment.
Participates in the planning and equipping of health rooms in schools.
Exhibits and facilitates human relations and communication skills.
Provides staff leadership, development, and training.
Manages the Health Services budget.
Demonstrates professional growth and self-improvement.
Develop positive school community relations.
Communicate in a timely and effective manner with staff, administrators, and parents.
Provides support and resources to the nurses to maintain student health records.
Compiles and interprets statistics for the student population.
Supervises the nurses to ensure all students are properly immunized and that all newly enrolled students meet MDPH requirements for school admission.
Prepares, implements, and oversees various grant-funded activities related to the Comprehensive School Health Services Grant.
Promotes staff wellness activities and services.
Works directly with the Massachusetts DPH School Health Unit.
Provides resources on district protocols relative to student records and other health-related matters.
Responsible for district protocol relative to student health records/immunization.
Occasional coverage in the school nurses' office to create safe staff ratios.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
Conducts monthly nurse staff meetings according to unit A contract
Requirements:
A Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in the content area is required
Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
Demonstrated knowledge and competencies in the administration of school health programs and services
Valid MA DESE Certification
Minimum of five years of School Nursing Experience
CPR/AED certified
Ability to communicate orally and in writing to the Superintendent of Schools, School Committee, staff, students, other administrators, and parents
Strong interpersonal skills, responsibility for professional practice
Ability to work independently and carry out assigned projects to completion
Ability to prepare and administer a budget cost-effectively
Ability to apply technology to meet the needs and duties as outlined in the job description
Managerial and leadership skills
Knowledge of SNAP school health documentation system
