Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Network Administrator / Platform Specialist Job Description The Network Administrator / Platform Specialist plays a key role in designing, implementing, and maintaining specialized, secure computer and network systems. In this role, you develop new capabilities, enhance existing systems, and deliver robust, reliable solutions in complex, multi‑vendor environments. Responsibilities Configure and manage Cisco networking equipment, including Cisco switches, Cisco IOS CLI, Catalyst switches, and Firepower firewalls to support secure, reliable network operations. Implement STIG hardening practices on network devices and endpoints, and oversee structured cabling installations, including optical interfaces and twisted pair wiring. Troubleshoot Ethernet networks across all layers of the OSI model, resolving IP, TCP, and UDP connectivity and performance issues rather than simply identifying them. Manage all aspects of Linux administration, including file systems, permissions, kernel configuration, networking configuration, and user and group management. Install, configure, and support Linux-based operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux, and Rocky Linux in production environments. Develop and maintain automation using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and SaltStack, and write bash shell scripts to streamline configuration, deployment, and maintenance tasks. Install and configure audio/visual and surveillance systems, including wall displays, AV switching and distribution equipment, and surveillance cameras and recording systems. Implement and troubleshoot core services such as DNS and NTP, ensuring accurate name resolution and time synchronization across systems. Configure, monitor, and maintain security information and event management (SIEM) tools, including logging, event forwarding, audit logging, and alerting for security and compliance. Install and configure enterprise network storage arrays, including NetApp systems, and administer block and file storage volumes using technologies such as iSCSI, SMB, and NFS. Manage virtualization environments, including vSphere and vCenter clusters, and support other hypervisors as needed to ensure stable and scalable virtual infrastructure. Provide Windows desktop support, including configuring and applying Group Policies (GPOs), writing PowerShell scripts, and hardening Windows desktops to STIG standards. Install, configure, and maintain network hardware such as switches, firewalls, and various interface types and mediums, including structured cabling, and perform firmware and software upgrades. Apply security controls at the switch and firewall level, including layer‑2 security controls and firewall policy management, and perform network scanning and compliance activities. Manage firewall configurations and rulesets to maintain and improve the security posture of highly secure and air‑gapped environments. Use appropriate tools to troubleshoot operating systems (Linux and Windows) and network equipment, diagnosing and resolving complex issues across multiple layers. Create and maintain clear documentation and diagrams for network architectures, system configurations, processes, and procedures to support team understanding and long‑term maintainability. Collaborate effectively in a process‑driven, multi‑vendor, heterogeneous system environment, working closely with teammates and customers in a customer‑facing capacity. Perform hands‑on installation, configuration, and support of hardware in secure facilities, including lifting and positioning equipment as required. Adhere to security requirements and processes necessary for working with controlled goods and systems requiring SECRET security clearance. Contribute to the ongoing improvement of infrastructure‑as‑code, configuration management, logging, authentication, and security frameworks as the environment evolves. Essential Skills Degree or diploma in computer systems, computer science, information systems, or a closely related technical field. At least 4 years of relevant professional experience in network and systems administration in complex, multi‑vendor environments. Strong networking knowledge, including configuration and troubleshooting of switches, firewalls, and structured cabling. Hands‑on experience with Cisco networking technologies, including Cisco IOS CLI, Catalyst switches, and Firepower firewalls. Experience equivalent to CCNA/CCNP, with knowledge of 802.3ad link aggregation, 802.1Q VLANs, spanning tree protocols, and routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP. Deep understanding of the OSI model and the ability to troubleshoot issues across all layers, at both the network equipment and operating system levels. Proven ability to solve networking issues end‑to‑end, not just identify symptoms, using appropriate diagnostic tools and methodologies. Experience working with firewalls, including configuration, rule management, and security posture maintenance in secure environments. Strong security awareness and knowledge, including Group Policy Objects (GPOs), security tools, scanning, air‑gapped systems, networking security, firewall rules, and related processes. Hands‑on experience administering Linux operating systems, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux, and Rocky Linux. Experience with Windows operating systems, including desktop support, hardening, and Group Policy management. Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere and vCenter, or other hypervisors in production environments. Ability to work effectively in highly secure, isolated, and air‑gapped environments while following strict security protocols. Strong problem‑solving skills and a demonstrated ability to learn continuously and adapt to new technologies and processes. Experience working collaboratively in a team environment rather than exclusively in isolated individual roles. Strong communication skills, including the ability to interact with customers and stakeholders in a clear and professional manner. Experience in a process‑driven environment with adherence to established procedures, standards, and documentation requirements. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform hands‑on installation, configuration, and support of hardware in technical facilities. Strong documentation and diagramming skills for systems, networks, and processes. Eligibility and willingness to obtain and hold security clearance at the SECRET level. Ability to pass security assessment requirements for participation in the Controlled Goods Program (CGP). Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Richmond, BC.
