Job Title: Millwright Apprentice / Maintenance Technician
Job Description
This short-term shutdown opportunity is ideal for a Millwright Apprentice or Maintenance Technician with heavy industrial experience who enjoys hands-on work in a fast-paced, production-driven environment. You will perform maintenance, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of industrial machinery and equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation throughout a two-week shutdown period. The role involves working with mechanical systems, rigging and hoisting, and a variety of industrial components while supporting both planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
Responsibilities
Perform maintenance and repair of industrial equipment and machinery in a heavy industrial environment.
Modify, repair, install, maintain, and troubleshoot packaging and other manufacturing equipment to minimize downtime and support production needs.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving mechanical systems, basic plumbing, basic welding, and metal work.
Carry out equipment, line, and system installations, ensuring proper alignment, setup, and safe operation.
Execute decommissioning of equipment and machinery, including safe disassembly and removal of components.
Support commissioning and start-up of equipment and systems after installation or repair, verifying proper function and performance.
Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance tasks in accordance with maintenance plans and procedures.
Respond to shutdowns and breakdowns, diagnosing faults quickly and implementing effective repairs.
Conduct troubleshooting and diagnostics on mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and related systems to identify root causes of equipment issues.
Assist with facility upgrades and modifications, including mechanical assembly and installation based on blueprints.
Provide maintenance shift coverage as required, ensuring consistent support for production operations.
Work with bearings, belts, pumps, conveyors, and other mechanical components, including installation, replacement, and alignment.
Handle conveyor maintenance such as tracking belts, changing rollers, and installing mechanical splices.
Perform repairs on fans, airlocks, gearboxes, pneumatic cylinders, and pumps to restore and maintain reliable operation.
Operate overhead cranes and rigging equipment safely to move, position, and install heavy components.
Use mechanical assembly skills and interpret blueprints to complete installations and repairs accurately.
Follow all safety procedures and use required certifications (including working at heights and lockout/tagout) to maintain a safe work environment.
Essential Skills
Registered Millwright Apprentice and/or Maintenance Technician with 2–5 years of experience in a heavy industrial environment.
Proven experience performing preventative maintenance and repair on industrial machinery and equipment.
Hands-on experience with rigging and hoisting for moving and installing heavy equipment and components.
Strong mechanical aptitude, including working with bearings, belts, pumps, conveyors, and related mechanical assemblies.
Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve issues involving mechanics, basic plumbing, basic welding, and metal work.
Experience working with large bearings (50 mm or greater in diameter).
Proficiency in conveyor maintenance, including tracking belts, changing rollers, and installing mechanical splices.
Experience performing repairs on fans, airlocks, gearboxes, pneumatic cylinders, and pumps.
Ability to operate overhead cranes safely in an industrial environment.
Capability to read and interpret blueprints for mechanical assembly and installation.
Ownership and use of appropriate mechanical tools required to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
Valid certifications in Working at Heights (WAH), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), WHMIS, and 4 Steps of Safety (or equivalent).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
BackgroundD in industrial maintenance, construction, or mechanical trades within heavy industrial settings.
Experience with hydraulics and pneumatics, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and maintenance documentation.
Comfort working on shutdown projects, including extended shifts and time-sensitive work.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices in hot, dusty, and noisy environments.
Ability to work collaboratively with other trades and maintenance personnel during shutdowns and upgrades.

Work Environment
The role is based in a heavy industrial environment that is hot, dusty, and loud, requiring comfort working in a non–temperature-controlled facility. You will work primarily day shifts starting at 6:00 a.m., with 10–12 hour shifts at a minimum during the shutdown period. The work involves frequent use of industrial tools and equipment such as overhead cranes, rigging and hoisting gear, and a variety of mechanical tools. You will work around large rotating equipment, conveyors, pumps, fans, and other process machinery, following strict safety and lockout/tagout procedures. The setting is production-oriented, with multiple tasks occurring simultaneously, and requires appropriate industrial attire such as work boots, long sleeves, and other personal protective equipment as required for hot, dusty, and noisy conditions.
