Position Overview
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School is seeking an experienced and passionate Middle School teacher to join its dynamic Fine Arts team. The role includes teaching MYP Theatre Arts 7–9 (Musical Theatre and Drama) and English Language Arts, or another teachable subject, in Grades 7–9.
Applicants with vocal training and/or choral directing experience are encouraged to apply. The position includes co-curricular leadership of a popular Middle School choir and vocal direction support for the Senior School musical. Teachers benefit from exceptional Fine Arts facilities and a collaborative, student centered learning environment.
This position begins with a probationary contract for the 2026–27 school year, with the potential of a continuous contract following a successful probationary year.
Core Areas of Responsibility
Teaching & Learning
· Deliver highly engaging IB MYP Musical Theatre and Fine Arts learning experiences aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies and the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate.
· Develop student skills in vocal technique, acting, movement, music literacy, collaboration, and reflective artistic practice through dynamic, performance-based learning.
· Utilize a variety of effective teaching, classroom management, differentiation, and assessment practices to support student growth and achievement.
· Conduct formative and summative assessment, evaluate student progress, and communicate learning clearly with students and parents.
· Understand individual student learning needs and adapt instruction to support a range of abilities, confidence levels, and learning profiles.
Performing Arts & Program Leadership
· Lead and grow a vibrant co-curricular choral program focused on ensemble singing, harmony, vocal development, rehearsal discipline, and engaging performances.
· Support the annual school musical through vocal direction, rehearsal leadership, staging support, choreography collaboration, and energetic preparation of student performers.
· Select and prepare developmentally appropriate choral and musical theatre repertoire that balances artistic challenge, creativity, and joyful performance experiences.
· Foster a positive and inclusive performing arts culture that builds confidence, communication skills, creativity, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging.
Community, Collaboration & Student Support
· Understand and implement the Mission, Vision, and values of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School and actively support the IB Learner Profile.
· Create supportive learning environments that encourage inquiry, creativity, risk taking, and meaningful student engagement.
· Collaborate closely with school administration, the MYP Coordinator, Fine Arts Learning Leader and colleagues, and faculty across the school community.
· Work effectively with students and colleagues in a variety of learning and performance environments.
· Maintain positive, professional, and responsive communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
· Ensure the safety, well being, and supervision of students in accordance with school procedures and policies.
Qualifications and Experience
· Hold a valid Alberta Teaching Certificate, or be eligible to obtain certification, with experience teaching Grades 7 to 9 students.
· Hold a degree in a related Fine Arts or Performing Arts field.
· Strong vocal and choral pedagogy, including experience with changing adolescent voices, ensemble development, and musical theatre performance.
· Ability to read music confidently and teach rhythm, harmony, part singing, and vocal technique effectively.
· Knowledge of acting, movement, staging, and basic choreography within a musical theatre context.
· IB MYP experience, or experience within an inquiry driven learning environment, is considered an asset.
· Strong classroom management, rehearsal leadership, collaboration, and communication skills within active performing arts settings.
· Ability to work effectively with colleagues and production teams under the direction of a Production Director.
· Familiarity with basic theatre production and technical systems, including microphones, sound support, staging logistics, backstage coordination, and collaboration with technical crews during performances and productions.
· Highly organized, adaptable, and skilled at building positive relationships within a diverse school community.
· Demonstrated commitment to inclusive learning environments, student wellbeing, and occupational health and safety.

· Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and self-reflection to refine and enhance counselling practice.
· Engage in ongoing professional learning.
· Stay current with educational research on how students learn and the factors that influence students’ learning and achievement.
