Job DescriptionJob Description
Job Title: Mechanical Project Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on the detailed mechanical engineering scope of industrial and municipal water and wastewater systems, as well as biological sludge incineration and digestion projects. The Mechanical Project Engineer develops key technical documents, prepares comprehensive RFQ packages, and conducts technical bid evaluations for rotating equipment, vessels, valves, and other mechanical equipment. The engineer collaborates closely with a cross-functional engineering team and broader project stakeholders to deliver high-quality, on-time, and on-budget solutions that meet customer expectations. Approximately half of the role involves technical design and analysis, while the other half centers on organizing project documentation and coordinating with vendors.
Responsibilities
Perform mechanical and process design for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems, ensuring high design quality while meeting project schedules, budgets, and customer expectations.
Develop detailed specifications and design documentation for biological sludge incineration and digestion systems, including all relevant mechanical components.
Perform required calculations to specify equipment, including general hydraulics, chemical feed systems, vessels and tanks, pumps, filters, blowers, compressed air systems, piping systems, valves, and instrumentation.
Prepare technical RFQ packages for rotating equipment, vessels, valves, compressors, pumps, and other mechanical equipment used in water and wastewater treatment systems.
Conduct technical bid evaluations for mechanical equipment, comparing vendor proposals and ensuring compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and performance requirements.
Review and interpret P&IDs and PFDs, including material balances, to ensure accurate mechanical and process design integration.
Work with hydraulic designs, including calculations for sizing pumps, compressors, valves, and tanks, ensuring systems operate efficiently and reliably.
Organize and maintain project documentation, ensuring that engineering deliverables, calculations, drawings, and vendor data are accurate, complete, and up to date.
Coordinate and communicate with vendors regarding technical requirements, equipment specifications, and documentation to support procurement and project execution.
Collaborate with project engineers, other mechanical engineers, and drafting teams to integrate mechanical designs into overall project layouts and deliverables.
Support cross-functional project teams by providing mechanical engineering expertise during design, procurement, and implementation phases.
Contribute to maintaining project timelines by proactively identifying and resolving mechanical design issues and supporting timely decision-making.
Participate in design reviews and internal meetings to ensure alignment between mechanical design, process requirements, and project objectives.
Apply industry codes and standards, including ASME and relevant piping standards, in the design and specification of mechanical systems.
Support projects in various process industries such as water treatment, wastewater treatment, food and beverage, chemicals, oil and gas, and hazardous environments, as required.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
At least 5 years of design experience in water treatment or wastewater treatment as a Mechanical Engineer or Project Engineer, working on the front end of projects.
Strong mechanical and process design experience for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and PFDs, including material balances.
Experience performing hydraulic design calculations, including sizing pumps, compressors, valves, and tanks.
Proficiency in specifying equipment such as pumps, compressors, valves, vessels, tanks, filters, blowers, chemical feed systems, piping systems, and instrumentation.
Engineering experience (not drafting or pure design-only roles), with responsibility for front-end project engineering.
Familiarity with ASME and piping standards relevant to mechanical design in process industries.
Experience working with water treatment and wastewater treatment technologies and systems.
Ability to manage a balance of technical tasks and non-technical tasks, including organizing documentation and vendor communication.
Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and vendors.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage timelines when project schedules are tight.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in process industries such as food and beverage, chemicals, oil and gas, petrochemical, or hazardous environments.
Experience in EPC or EPCM project environments.
Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD tools for mechanical design review and coordination.
Experience with piping design and layout in industrial facilities.
Exposure to water management projects and large-scale industrial facilities.
Ability to collaborate with distributed teams, including international drafting or engineering support teams.
Strong organizational skills for managing technical documentation, RFQs, and vendor submittals.
Comfort working in a dynamic environment where project priorities and timelines may shift.
Work Environment
The role is based primarily in an office environment, with approximately 90% of the time spent on-site at a modern engineering facility and up to 5% travel throughout North America as needed for project support. Core working hours are typically between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility required to meet project deadlines when timelines are tight. The facility is new, well lit, and includes amenities such as a cafeteria and a fitness centre, contributing to a comfortable and professional workplace. The dress code is business casual, including a collared shirt or golf polo and dress pants. The culture emphasizes strong collaboration and a supportive team environment, while acknowledging that the work can be demanding when schedules are compressed. The organization offers options for working from home, providing some flexibility in how work is performed, while maintaining a focus on delivering high-quality engineering solutions for large, complex water management projects.
