Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Mechanical Installation Technician Job Description This role involves assembling and installing conveyor systems and an advanced grid automation structure within a large distribution facility. You will work in small teams to install mechanical components, use a variety of hand and power tools, operate lifts when required, and complete all tasks with a high level of precision and safety. The position focuses on mechanical installation of the grid automation structure and associated peripheral systems, as well as supporting commissioning and go-live activities. Responsibilities Assemble and install multiple conveyor systems and grid automation structures according to engineering specifications and site plans. Install the grid automation structure and associated mechanical components within a new distribution facility. Complete all elements of the installation scope, including grid installation, cladding, false bottom totes, grid finishing, peripheral stations, maintenance areas, and charging stations. Support commissioning activities and assist with go-live operations to ensure systems function correctly and safely. Work in small teams to plan, coordinate, and complete installation tasks efficiently and on schedule. Use a variety of hand and power tools to assemble, fasten, align, and adjust mechanical components with a high level of accuracy. Operate scissor lifts and other access equipment as required to perform work at heights safely. Participate in tasks that may involve working on elevated platforms and within a construction environment. Follow all site safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safe work practices. Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure tools and equipment are used and stored safely. Bring and maintain a personal tool kit that meets the minimum required tool list for the role. Collaborate closely with teammates, supervisors, and other trades to resolve issues and ensure installation quality. Identify and report any mechanical, safety, or quality issues encountered during installation. Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting practical ways to improve installation efficiency and safety. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience in conveyor installation, construction labour, millwright work, welding, or similar mechanical installation roles. Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to read and follow installation instructions and layout guidance. Proven experience using hand and power tools safely and effectively in a construction or industrial environment. Experience working in heavy-duty construction or industrial settings, including familiarity with site protocols and safety practices. Experience working at heights and on elevated platforms, including comfort using scissor lifts or similar equipment. Ability to operate or work around forklifts and aerial work platforms (AWPs), including boom or scissor lifts. Demonstrated ability to work safely on active construction sites and to follow all safety procedures. Capability to work effectively in small teams, communicate clearly, and coordinate tasks with others. Physical ability to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, bending, and working on feet for extended periods. Willingness to work extended hours, including up to 60 hours per week during peak periods. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with mechanical assembly of conveyors, grid systems, or similar automation structures. Forklift experience and a valid forklift license are strong assets; approximately one in every three workers on the team will need a forklift license. Aerial work platform (AWP) experience, including boom or scissor lifts, is highly valued. All team members must obtain scissor lift certification prior to starting work on site. Comfort working in a construction site environment, including around heavy equipment and ongoing trades. Attention to detail and precision in mechanical assembly and alignment. Ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical issues during installation and escalate more complex issues appropriately. Personal tool kit that meets or exceeds the minimum standard tool list, including a socket set (7/16” to ¾”), wrench set (7/16” to ¾”), screwdriver set, hammer, rubber mallet, 6” torpedo level, square, small pry bar, 10” and 12” adjustable wrenches, imperial measuring tape, Allen key set, and drift. Work Environment This position is based on a construction site within a new distribution facility, focused on the installation of grid automation and conveyor systems. The standard schedule runs from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with the understanding that additional hours or schedule changes may be required. During peak periods, you may work up to 60 hours per week, typically structured as five 12-hour shifts or six 10-hour shifts, as agreed with the project team. You will work in a heavy-duty industrial environment that may require tasks on elevated platforms and regular use of scissor lifts; some team members will also operate forklifts. The role requires consistent adherence to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety boots, hard hats, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and eye protection. You will need to bring and use your own tools that meet the specified minimum tool list. The environment is team-oriented, with a strong focus on safe work practices, clear communication, and coordination across different trades and installation crews.
