Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Mechanical Designer Job Description The Mechanical Designer will design exterior and interior lighting systems for locomotives and rail passenger vehicles, producing detailed 3D models, general assemblies, and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks. This role focuses on developing creative and innovative engineered solutions that meet or exceed customer requirements while maintaining accurate design records and adhering to project timelines and procedures. Responsibilities Design exterior and interior lighting systems for locomotive and rail passenger vehicles. Produce detailed 3D models, general assemblies, and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks. Create and maintain accurate drawings and bills of materials for all assigned projects. Revise designs and drawings based on internal feedback and customer requirements. Develop engineered solutions that are creative, innovative, and aligned with customer specifications. Keep comprehensive project design records and files for all design activities. Maintain an organized filing system for all CAD files in accordance with established procedures. Ensure adherence to project timelines, schedules, and deliverable dates. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and extrusion. Apply GD&T principles to ensure designs meet functional and manufacturing requirements. Essential Skills Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Mechanical Designer. Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, particularly for sheet metal design. Experience with 3D modeling software such as CATIA, Inventor, Pro-E, SolidEdge or similar tools. Strong knowledge and design experience for manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal, metal and plastic extruding, fabrication, and 3D printing. Working knowledge of GD&T and its application in mechanical design. Basic understanding of electronics and printed circuit boards (PCB). Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent capacity for synthesis, analysis, and innovation in engineering design. Additional Skills & Qualifications Specific experience with SolidWorks is considered a strong asset. Experience with injection molding, die-casting, and stamping is an asset. Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM for managing design data and CAD files. Experience with sheet metal design for lighting or similar applications. Understanding of shock and vibration considerations in mechanical design. Ability to work effectively within established design procedures and documentation standards. Demonstrated ability to incorporate customer feedback into iterative design improvements. Work Environment This role is based on-site at a facility in Mississauga, working five days per week with some flexibility available when needed. The environment focuses on designing complete interior and exterior lighting systems for rail applications, with access to modern CAD tools such as SolidWorks and related PDM systems, and collaboration with manufacturing processes including CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication. A new facility is being built, with plans to move operations there, offering an updated workspace dedicated to innovative LED lighting solutions for rail and public transportation industries.
