Legal Counsel – Employment and Litigation
Office of the General Counsel and Board Secretariat (GCBS) provides strategic legal, compliance, privacy and risk advice to support the university’s mission.

Key Responsibilities
Provides legal advice and opinions on labour and employment matters, including workplace accommodation, occupational health and safety, faculty hiring/employment, contracts and collective agreement interpretation.
Advises on employment‑related disputes and litigation, including internal tribunal matters, external tribunals, and courts.
Drafts, reviews and revises pleadings, submissions to regulatory bodies, settlement documents, and correspondence with complainants/applicants, plaintiffs or their counsel.
Ensures compliance and facilitates decision‑making through proactive advice, risk assessment and expert counsel to university leadership.
Participates in developing precedents, workflow practices and processes for routine matters and key legal operations.
Provides training and education to internal units on evolving legal and compliance areas related to the workplace, such as investigations, employment practices, dispute resolution and artificial intelligence.

Qualifications
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), Juris Doctor (J.D) or equivalent law degree required.
Minimum of three years post‑call experience in a law firm, in‑house, or government legal setting, including at least two years in employment/labour law with litigation or dispute‑resolution exposure.
Prior experience in human rights, administrative law, privacy or access is an asset.
Must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
Knowledge of legislation relevant to post‑secondary education and the public sector preferred.
Excellent facilitation and mediation skills to develop solutions for diverse groups.
Strong analytical, drafting and issue‑spotting skills, translating legal risk into practical advice.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
Strong judgment, decision‑making and interpersonal skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Employment Details
Reports To: General Counsel, Secretary of the Board of Governors and Chief Privacy Officer
Work Location: Hybrid (3 days in‑person/on‑campus and remaining days remote), subject to change
Start Date: ASAP
Grade: D62
Salary Scale: Min $106,210 – Max $169,666 (commensurate with qualifications)
Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week
Additional Information
Equivalent experience or a combination of equivalent experience and education may be accepted in place of formal education.
