Our Company
Looking for a role where you get to outsmart fraudsters using AI, data, and a sharp eye for patterns? Are you the kind of person who notices when the numbers just don’t add up? The Internal Controls Specialist role at Square One might be the one for you.
Square One was the first online home insurance provider in Canada. And we’re the only home and car insurance provider in Canada that lets clients choose what they want to insure, so they only pay for what they need. Our platform processes millions of financial transactions each year. Protecting our customers, our business, and our integrity is non-negotiable.
Your Role
As an Internal Controls Lead, you help keep Square One and our customers protected. You spot suspicious patterns before they become problems. You build smart, scalable tools that detect fraud, close gaps in our processes, and turn raw data into real decisions.
You work cross-functionally with our Claims, Product & Underwriting, Operations, Legal & Compliance, Sales & Service, and Technology divisions to identify emerging risks and strengthen our internal controls. You’re as comfortable digging into a dataset as you are explaining what you found to people who don’t speak SQL.
One of the things you enjoy most about Square One is the supportive team environment. You know you’re never set up for failure; instead, you get all the coaching, mentoring, training, and tools you need for continued success.
Your Responsibilities
As a member of Square One’s team, you’re directly involved in protecting the integrity of our operations. Your primary responsibilities include:
Fraud detection and prevention
Monitor claims activity, underwriting patterns, and customer behaviour for indicators of fraud, abuse, or operational anomalies.
Develop and refine fraud detection rules, risk scoring models, and exception reporting.
Identify fraud trends and emerging threats using AI tools, statistical analysis, and data mining.
Support internal investigations by gathering, validating, and analyzing digital and operational evidence.
Build proactive fraud prevention measures and operational safeguards.
AI and data analytics
Use AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, and business intelligence platforms to improve fraud detection.
Work with structured and unstructured data to identify correlations and behavioural anomalies.
Build dashboards, reports, and automated monitoring for fraud and audit metrics.
Partner with technical teams to evaluate and implement new fraud detection technologies.
Audit and internal controls
Conduct operational and process audits to identify control weaknesses and process gaps.
Review workflows and procedures to assess compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Recommend process improvements and control enhancements to mitigate fraud and operational risk.
Document findings, recommendations, and remediation plans.
Collaboration and strategy
Partner with other divisions on fraud-related initiatives.
Help establish fraud monitoring standards, KPIs, and reporting frameworks.
Contribute to long-term fraud prevention strategies and AI governance practices.
Educate internal teams on fraud indicators and prevention practices.
Your Qualifications
You have a desire to contribute to the overall success of the company. You do this by becoming an expert at what you do, directing your own work, and working with a team that has a broader purpose than just making profit. You and those who you work with would describe you as someone who:
Has an investigative mindset and superior attention to detail.
Has professional written and verbal communication skills.
Can translate complex data for any audience.
Thrives in a busy environment and enjoys performing a wide range of tasks.
Applies a high level of critical, analytical, and logical thinking.
Uses sound judgement and ethical reasoning to make decisions and take calculated risks.
Adapts well to, and often initiates, change.
Enjoys personal development and growth through learning.
Provides and receives constructive feedback.
Your Experience + Education
Your experience and education ensure your success at Square One. For this role, you have:
A Bachelor of Accounting, Business, Commerce, or equivalent.
At least 5 years of experience in fraud analysis, auditing, risk management, insurance operations, data analytics, or investigations.
At least 3 years of experience working with large datasets and reporting tools.
Familiarity with AI, machine learning, or predictive analytics tools.
Working knowledge of SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Python, R, or similar analytics platforms.
A professional certification such as CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CIP or FCIP, or a data analytics/AI credential.
Your Compensation + Benefits
You appreciate the fact that Square One personalizes your compensation and benefits in the same way it personalizes policies for its customers. Your very competitive compensation and benefits plan includes:
A competitive base salary, commensurate with experience.
4-weeks, not 3-weeks, of vacation to start and an additional week after only 3 years.
The ability to work from home.
Flexible medical, dental, vision and extended health care coverage.
Short and long-term disability coverage.
Participation in the corporate profit-sharing and performance bonus plans.
