Schlegel Urban Developments Corp. (SUD) is a mid-sized Kitchener based real estate development and management company. The company is recognized for it’s master planned residential subdivision projects and unique commercial developments, the most prominent being the mixed-use Williamsburg Town Centre and Wallaceton Marketplace, the Bauer Marketplace in Waterloo and the St. Jacobs Market District, home to Canada’s largest year-round indoor/outdoor farmers’ market and the new Stockyards Brewery & Restaurant.

We are looking for that right individual who is looking to combine their passion for accounting with an interest in the real estate and/or restaurant industry by joining our growing and highly effective accounting group.
Intermediate Accountant
Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, in this new role, the Intermediate Accountant is required to support the accounting team with cross-training of accounts receivable, accounts payable and month end functions for SUD and various related companies. This includes but is not limited to:
Support the Finance Manager with the commercial and residential tenant related life cycle:
Ensure pertinent lease details (deposits, recoveries, inducements, rent-free periods, rent deferral plans, step-ups) for tenants is captured and review tenant ledgers for accuracy.
Ensure efficient turnover and transition of utility accounts by diligently working with tenants and utility companies. Calculate and invoice utilities for turnover delays.
Support the Finance Manager with the calculation of annual operating cost reconciliations with tenants.
Be a knowledgeable contact for tenants and act as an information liaison between tenants and management.
Work with VP Leasing & Commercial Real Estate on monitoring operating costs and cost reduction efforts.
Support accounts receivable collections.
Support the Finance Manager with monitoring inventory management and point-of-sales systems for accuracy.
Track/record weekly petty cash and credit card transactions.
Record routine transactions (mortgage payments, recurring journal entries, amortization etc.).
Support the Finance Manager with month end and year end closing procedures including balance sheet reconciliations.
Review general ledger monthly for coding accuracy and variance from budget. Investigate variances for reasonableness.
Support the Finance Manager with annual budgeting process.
Prepare various accounting reports and analysis as required.
Support the Finance Manager with external filings/reporting (eg. HST, EHT, WSIB, MPAC, Statscan, other excise tax filings).
Experience and Qualifications
5+ years of experience in progressive accounting roles
CPA designation considered an asset
Proficient in Microsoft Excel
Experience with Yardi products or Quickbooks Online an asset, but not required, on-site training will be available
Property management, restaurant or brewery experience and industry knowledge considered an asset
Independent self-starter that enjoys a hands-on small team environment
Excels at demonstrating attention to detail and achieving accuracy while adhering to deadlines on a consistent basis
Excellent communication and customer service skills, including tact, diplomacy and judgement to problem solve independently and in collaboration with other team members
Salary
$60,000 - $70,000, adjusted for experience.
