The Law Society of BC is seeking a temporary, full‑time Intake Staff Lawyer in our Intake & Early Resolution department for a 6‑month term. The Intake Staff Lawyer is responsible for the effective assessment and resolution of complaints against lawyers, students and former members and works with the Professional Regulation Department and other staff, as necessary. The Intake Staff Lawyer is also responsible for the initial review and assessment of complaints involving disciplinary or competency issues and for providing advice to Intake Officers and other staff. Where appropriate the Intake Staff Lawyer may assist in referring these complaints to the appropriate Committee of Benchers, together with recommendations as to the suitable sanction or action required. The position requires that the Intake Staff Lawyer efficiently manage the assigned file load.
Responsibilities
Handling of public telephone enquiries, including communicating the role of the Law Society, the complaints process and alternative sources of assistance and information
Reviewing, assigning new complaints, including opening, classifying and prioritizing them
Reviewing and assessing new complaints to determine if there are professional conduct and/or competency issues
Requesting and obtaining substantiation from complainants when necessary
Considering ways to resolve concerns at an early stage
Providing advice to Intake Officers and other staff as needed for the effective resolution of complaints
Exercising discretion to close a complaints file or send it to the Discipline Committee or Practice Standards Committees
Preparing opinions of fact and law for consideration by the Discipline and Practice Standards Committees
Working with and coordinating investigations carried out by other departments within the Law Society
Other duties as the Director of Intake & Early Resolution may require
Qualifications
Practicing membership in the Law Society of B.C. or eligibility for membership
A minimum of five years of recent practice experience
Superior writing and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Mediation and Trauma‑Informed training is an asset
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
The salary range for this position is $145,326.22 to $176,101.67.
