Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: HVAC Technician Job Description The HVAC Technician installs, services, and maintains commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems, with a focus on complex projects in commercial, institutional, and high-rise environments. This role involves reading and interpreting technical documentation, assembling and commissioning systems, diagnosing and repairing malfunctions, and ensuring all work complies with industry standards and safety procedures. The technician also supports system design activities, mentors apprentices, and maintains accurate records of work performed. Responsibilities Read, interpret, and execute drawings, schematics, and blueprints for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Review blueprints, building codes, and specifications to determine work details, methods, and procedures. Assemble and install refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their component parts in commercial and institutional buildings. Assist with the design and layout of multi-head VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems. Create detailed material lists based on drawings and site layouts to support project planning and procurement. Start up and commission systems, including testing lines for leaks and recording readings for documentation and quality control. Direct and guide apprentices on the installation of piping systems and other mechanical components. Keep accurate records of assignments and produce detailed work reports for each project or service call. Diagnose malfunctions in HVAC and refrigeration systems and repair or replace controls, electrical wiring, or other faulty components. Perform service work on HVAC systems in commercial, institutional, and high-rise settings. Ensure all work complies with industry standards, company procedures, and the Safety Manual, and consistently follow all safety rules. Maintain a professional and presentable demeanor while working in occupied commercial buildings and around business tenants. Coordinate work schedules to accommodate tenant needs, including performing noisy or disruptive tasks outside of regular business hours when required. Essential Skills 3+ years of HVAC service experience in commercial, institutional, or high-rise environments. Journeyperson Red Seal Ticket in a relevant HVAC or refrigeration trade. Demonstrated service HVAC experience, including troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance. Ability to travel independently to various job sites. Ability to provide and maintain a clean driving record. Strong communication skills for interacting with clients, tenants, colleagues, and apprentices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Gasfitter B ticket is an asset. Additional years of HVAC service experience beyond the minimum requirement are considered an advantage. Experience with multi-head VRF system design and installation. Experience working in tenant improvement (TI) projects within existing commercial buildings. Comfort working in occupied spaces and maintaining a professional appearance around business tenants. Openness to continuing education and ongoing technical training relevant to the HVAC field. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in existing commercial buildings and infrastructure, with all work focused on commercial projects rather than residential. Much of the work involves tenant improvement (TI) in occupied buildings, so technicians must be presentable and professional around business tenants. The typical shift starts at 7:00 or 7:30 a.m. and runs for an eight-hour day, with overtime as required to meet project and service demands.
