Hospice Speech Therapist The Hospice Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) evaluates and treats patients experiencing communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders related to terminal illness. The SLP works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary hospice team to promote comfort, safety, and quality of life while honoring patient goals of care. Key Responsibilities Perform comprehensive assessments of: Swallowing function (dysphagia) Speech and language abilities Cognitive-communication skills Voice disorders Develop and implement individualized treatment plans focused on: Safe swallowing strategies Comfort feeding approaches Communication enhancement Energy conservation techniques Compensatory strategies for cognitive decline Educate patients, families, and caregivers on: Safe feeding techniques Aspiration precautions Communication tools and strategies Disease progression and realistic therapy expectations Recommend adaptive equipment and alternative communication methods as needed. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings with nurses, social workers, chaplains, physicians, and other hospice staff. Document evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with regulatory and agency guidelines. Provide emotional support to patients and families during end-of-life care. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and hospice regulations. Qualifications Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program. Current state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience (hospice, home health, or medical setting preferred). Knowledge of end-of-life care principles. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (for home hospice positions).
