Job DescriptionJob Description Title: HDD Locator Reports to: OSP Construction Manager Location: Red Deer, Alberta (projects across Alberta) Last Reviewed: September 2025 Overview As an HDD Locator, you play a critical role in the safe and efficient delivery of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects across Alberta. Using advanced locating equipment, you will guide drill operators to ensure accurate bore paths, protect underground utilities, and deliver precision installations of conduit and fiber. This position requires strong technical skills, situational awareness, and the ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced construction environments. Responsibilities HDD Bore Path Guidance: Operate locating equipment to track and guide drill head location, depth, and pitch throughout the drilling process. Utility Avoidance: Ensure bore paths are clear of existing utilities by interpreting locates, daylighting results, and as-built drawings. Collaboration with Drill Crew: Communicate effectively with drill operators and ground crews to adjust drilling path in real-time. Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all Alberta OH&S, Utility Safety Partners, and company safety standards to prevent utility strikes and protect workers and the public. Documentation: Record bore paths, depths, and crossing details accurately for as-built packages. Equipment Maintenance: Maintain locating gear in optimal condition and perform pre-job checks. Adaptability: Adjust methods to meet varying soil, weather, and environmental conditions commonly encountered in Alberta. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Technical training in HDD locating is an asset. Experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience in HDD or underground utility construction. Skills: Proficient with HDD locating systems (e.g., DigiTrak, Subsite, etc.) Strong understanding of bore planning and interpretation of construction drawings Excellent verbal communication for operator/locator coordination Ability to problem-solve in the field under time-sensitive conditions Attributes: Safety-first mindset, detail-oriented, dependable, and able to travel to project sites across Alberta.
