Overview
The Horizontal Directional Driller (HDD Operator) is responsible for the
safe and precise operation of drilling equipment
to install conduit, fiber, and related infrastructure in a variety of ground conditions. Working closely with the HDD Locator and field crews, the Driller ensures that bores are executed according to design, with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and efficiency. This role requires technical expertise in HDD operations, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to changing field conditions.
Responsibilities
Drill Operation:
Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground conduit and fiber along planned bore paths.
Team Coordination:
Work closely with the HDD Locator to maintain alignment, depth, and accuracy throughout drilling operations.
Utility Protection:
Ensure compliance with all locate information and utility maps, preventing strikes and maintaining safe clearances.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to all Alberta OH&S, Utility Safety Partners, and company safety standards at all times.
Equipment Care:
Perform daily equipment inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure optimal performance.
Adaptability:
Adjust drilling methods to suit varying soil types, weather conditions, and environmental considerations.
Documentation:
Provide accurate records of drilling activities, including bore logs, fluid usage, and site conditions.
Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum 2 years operating HDD rigs in telecommunications, utilities, or pipeline construction.
Skills:
Proficiency in operating HDD rigs (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or equivalent)
Strong understanding of bore planning, fluid mixing, and ground conditions
Ability to interpret construction drawings and follow bore design plans
Effective communication with Locator and ground crew
