HEAD CHEF – Lead the Kitchen Behind Vancouver's Fuel for Performance
Fit Fuel Meals | Greater Vancouver, BC (YVR Prep Commissary) | Full-Time
ABOUT FIT FUEL MEALS
Fit Fuel Meals is a growing meal prep company feeding athletes, busy professionals, and anyone serious about their health. We cook fresh, macro-balanced meals that taste as good as they perform, and we deliver them across the Lower Mainland. We're scaling fast moving into a new commissary kitchen and introducing modern packaging that extends shelf life and we need a Head Chef to lead the kitchen through that growth.
THE ROLE
We're looking for an experienced, organized, and driven chef who can run high-volume production without sacrificing flavor or consistency. You'll own the menu, the recipes, and the production line, working closely with our Kitchen Manager and a small, tight-knit team. If you love food, thrive on structure, and want to build something rather than just clock in, this is your kitchen.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead daily batch production for hundreds of portioned meals per week, on time and to spec
- Develop, test, and refresh a rotating menu of healthy, high-protein, macro-conscious meals
- Standardize recipes with exact portion sizes, yields, and macro/nutrition targets so every meal is consistent
- Plan production schedules and prep lists around order volumes and delivery days
- Manage food costing, ordering, receiving, and inventory to hit food-cost targets and minimize waste
- Maintain strict food safety, sanitation, allergen control, labeling, and temperature logs
- Help roll out and refine our new MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) workflow for longer shelf life
- Train, lead, and motivate cooks and packers; set the standard for speed, cleanliness, and attitude
- Keep the kitchen inspection-ready at all times and support health authority compliance
WHAT YOU BRING
- 3+ years of professional culinary experience, including at least 1–2 years in a Sous Chef, Chef de Partie, or Head Chef role
- Experience in high-volume production: meal prep, catering, commissary, institutional, or banquet kitchens strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of cooking techniques, batch cooking, cook-chill, and food storage
- Understanding of nutrition and macros (protein, carbs, fats) — experience with fitness or health-focused menus is a big plus
- Proven ability to cost recipes, manage inventory, and control waste
- Food Safe Level 1 required (Level 2 or Red Seal Cook certification is an asset)
- Solid knowledge of allergen management and food safety regulations
- Leadership skills: you communicate clearly, stay calm under pressure, and hold a team accountable
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and reliable — you show up early and leave the kitchen better than you found it
- Reliable transportation to the commissary kitchen
NICE TO HAVE
- Red Seal certification or culinary school diploma
- Experience with vacuum sealing, MAP, or other packaging equipment
- Experience writing SOPs or building kitchen systems
- Personal interest in fitness, training, or performance nutrition
SCHEDULE
- Full-time, approximately 35–40 hours per week
- Day shifts — no late nights
- Current production days include weekends; moving toward a Monday–Friday production schedule as we scale
COMPENSATION & PERKS
- $25–$32 per hour, based on experience
- Staff meals eat what you cook
- Creative control over the menu and a real say in how the kitchen runs
- Room to grow with a company that's expanding
- Supportive, small-team environment where your work gets noticed
HOW TO APPLY
Apply through ZipRecruiter with your resume and a short note telling us about your production kitchen experience and your favorite healthy dish to cook. Photos of your plates are welcome. Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview and a paid working trial shift.
