The Hardware Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, testing, and optimizing hardware components for our innovative products. You will be working directly on new and existing connected gas detecting and lone‑worker safety devices across Blackline Safety's entire portfolio of hardware products. In addition to electrical design, you will collaborate with mechanical, firmware, manufacturing process and quality engineers to realize best‑in‑class, high‑quality devices to be delivered in volume production. Blackline Safety internally architects, designs, tests, manufactures and sells our products with internal engineering, SMT, firmware & software, and customer support teams.
In this role, you will contribute to the electrical architecture, schematic design, PCB layout, and system‑level integration of multi‑layer boards that meet performance, integration, and cost requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the design, integration, and verification of printed circuit boards (PCBs), flexible printed circuits (FPCs), and overall system‑level solutions
Work with cross‑functional teams to define system requirements and design constraints
Identify, diagnose and drive electrical‑related issues to closure
Communicate regular schedule and status updates to product leads
Travel within Canada and overseas as required
About You
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree
Minimum 5 years of industry experience designing high‑volume consumer/industrial electronic products
Strong EE fundamentals and hands‑on experience in prototype bring‑up and debugging, as well as functional verification and reliability testing
Experience with component selection, schematic capture and layout of HDI designs (Altium Designer preferred)
Experience with voltage regulators (SMPS, LDO), power delivery networks, analog and mixed‑signals, and battery‑powered designs
Experience with low‑speed and high‑speed digital interfaces (I2C, UART, SPI, USB, MIPI) and signal integrity fundamentals
Familiarity with using tools and standard lab equipment such as protocol analyzers, JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies
Strong communication, problem‑solving and analytical skills
Self‑starter who can work independently and collaboratively with a team
Bonus points for:
Experience with wireless chipsets and RF design including cellular, GNSS, Wi‑Fi, BLE, and NFC
Experience with programming languages such as C/C++ and Python
Experience with digital and analog simulation tools (LTspice, PowerDC/SI)
Experience with gas detection including electrochemical, IR, catalytic bead and other sensors
Experience designing for and resolving challenges related to EMC, product safety standards and other regulatory compliance requirements
Familiarity with hazardous location intrinsic safety standards, designs and certifications
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensing
