Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Forklift Operator (Afternoon Shift – Kelowna) Job Description The forklift operator safely and efficiently loads and unloads a wide variety of freight from trailers using a propane sit-down counterbalance (SDCB) forklift in a busy less-than-truckload (LTL) cross-dock environment. This role spends the majority of the shift operating a forklift in tight quarters, handling freight of varying sizes, shapes, and weights, while ensuring accuracy through paper and digital shipping documentation. Responsibilities Operate a propane sit-down counterbalance forklift for approximately 80% of the shift to load and unload freight from trailers in an LTL cross-dock environment. Handle a wide range of freight types, including small parcels and large, heavy, irregularly shaped items such as appliances and tires, ensuring secure and stable handling. Work safely and efficiently in tight quarters, maneuvering around an open dock with multiple doors and frequent traffic while turning tight corners and maintaining awareness of surroundings. Use paper shipping documents to verify that all products are accurately loaded and unloaded according to shipment requirements and destination. Transition to using complex digital shipping software as it is introduced, ensuring accurate data entry and verification of freight movements. Stage freight on the dock in designated areas to support efficient loading, unloading, and cross-docking operations. Lift and move items up to 50 pounds, sometimes repetitively, as part of daily loading and unloading activities. Collaborate with other operators, drivers, and dock personnel to maintain a steady flow of incoming and outgoing trucks. Follow all safety procedures and operational guidelines while working at a safe but fast pace in a high-traffic environment. Demonstrate reliability and flexibility with contract length, understanding that the assignment may be extended depending on internal hiring processes. Work independently with minimal supervision, taking initiative to keep freight moving and the dock organized. Communicate clearly in English with team members, drivers, and supervisors to coordinate freight movement and resolve issues as they arise. Essential Skills Minimum 1 year of experience operating a propane sit-down counterbalance (SDCB) forklift as a primary job duty in an LTL environment. Proven experience loading and unloading trailers using a counterbalance forklift in a cross-dock or similar setting. Valid forklift certification or ticket. Strong computer skills and the ability to learn and use digital shipping software. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, including repetitive lifting when required. Reliable transportation to and from the worksite. Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced, high-traffic dock environment. Good English communication skills, both verbal and written. Comfort working independently and taking initiative in a busy operational setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications 2–5 years of experience in an LTL environment. Experience working in cross-dock operations. Leadership or supervisory experience in a warehouse, dock, or transportation setting. Experience operating clamp trucks or shunt trucks. Familiarity with Truckmate or similar transportation management software. Ability to work comfortably in a multicultural, fast-paced environment. Comfortable with informal “shop talk” while maintaining professionalism. Why Work Here? You will join a fast-paced, growth-oriented operation that offers clear opportunities for advancement and long-term stability. Employees benefit from annual wage growth of approximately 3%, performance-based bonuses, and a generous boot allowance to support safety on the job. The comprehensive benefits package includes 100% coverage for medical and vision, extensive dental coverage, and dedicated allowances for psychological services, physiotherapy, massage therapy, and travel insurance. A competitive pension plan with employer matching, which increases at higher income levels, supports long-term financial security. The operation offers significant opportunities for overtime, enabling motivated team members to increase their earnings while contributing to a high-performing, supportive team culture. Work Environment This role is based in a fast-paced, 24-hour cross-dock facility that operates according to the arrival and departure of trucks. The dock features more than 50 doors, with multiple forklifts moving freight at a safe but rapid pace. Freight includes a wide range of products, from fridges to tires and other varied items, staged on the dock for efficient cross-docking. The culture is very fast-paced and multicultural, with a team of approximately 50 operators working per shift who are expected to be independent and ready to hit the ground running. You will primarily operate a propane sit-down counterbalance forklift and may interact with other equipment such as clamp trucks or shunt trucks, depending on operational needs. The role is scheduled on the second shift, Monday to Friday, from 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, which you must provide yourself; other appropriate work attire suitable for an active warehouse environment is expected.
