Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: Forklift Operator (Afternoon Shift) Job Description The Forklift Operator (Afternoon Shift) safely and efficiently loads and unloads a wide variety of freight from trailers and containers using a propane sit-down counterbalance (SDCB) forklift in a busy cross-dock environment. This role requires strong forklift skills in tight quarters, accurate handling of shipping documentation, and the ability to work quickly while maintaining a high standard of safety and attention to detail. Responsibilities Operate a propane sit-down counterbalance (SDCB) forklift for approximately 80% of the shift to load and unload freight from trailers and containers. Handle a wide variety of freight types and sizes, including small parcels to large, heavy, and irregularly shaped items, ensuring safe and secure movement at all times. Work efficiently in tight quarters, turning tight corners and maneuvering around a busy dock while maintaining safe operating practices. Use paper shipping documents to verify that all products are loaded and unloaded accurately, matching freight to the correct trailer or dock position. Adapt to and learn complex digital shipping software as the operation transitions from paper-based to digital systems in the coming months. Stage products on the dock in the correct locations to support efficient cross-dock and less-than-truckload (LTL) operations. Perform repetitive lifting of up to 50 pounds as required, including handbombing freight when necessary. Maintain a fast-paced work rhythm while following all safety procedures and guidelines for forklift operation and dock safety. Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch, and fellow operators to coordinate the flow of incoming and outgoing trucks and freight. Work independently with minimal supervision, taking initiative to keep freight moving and the dock organized. Demonstrate reliability in attendance and punctuality, including flexibility for a contract that may be extended based on internal hiring processes. Essential Skills Minimum 1 year of experience operating a propane sit-down counterbalance (SDCB) forklift as a primary job duty in a 3PL or LTL environment, specifically loading and unloading trailers. Valid forklift ticket or certification. Proven experience working in cross-dock or LTL freight operations. Good computer skills and the ability to learn complex shipping software. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively and perform handbombing when required. Reliable transportation to and from the facility. Strong English communication skills, both spoken and written. Ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to working safely in a busy dock setting with multiple forklifts and frequent truck movements. Additional Skills & Qualifications 2–5 years of experience in an LTL environment. Leadership or supervisory experience in a warehouse or cross-dock setting. Experience using Truckmate or similar transportation/warehouse management software. Comfort working in a multicultural, fast-paced team environment. Ability to work comfortably with shop-floor communication and terminology. Willingness for the contract to extend based on internal hiring processes. Why Work Here? Employees benefit from strong growth opportunities, including structured annual wage growth and performance bonuses that reward long-term contribution. The comprehensive benefits package covers medical and vision expenses at 100%, with generous coverage for psychological services, physiotherapy, massage therapy, dental care, and travel insurance. A competitive pension program with employer matching, which increases at higher earnings levels, supports long-term financial security. Team members receive an annual boot allowance to maintain proper safety footwear and have access to significant overtime opportunities for those who want to increase their earnings. The culture values independence, a strong work ethic, and the ability to hit the ground running in a supportive, multicultural environment. Work Environment The role is based in a fast-paced, 24-hour cross-dock operation where workload depends on the arrival and departure of trucks. The dock features more than 50 doors, with multiple forklifts operating simultaneously in a safe but rapid manner to move a wide range of products, from fridges to tires. Freight is staged on the dock and can be heavy or irregularly shaped, requiring careful handling and occasional handbombing. The facility is open and the dock can be cold, so employees should dress in layers. The afternoon shift runs from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The team size is approximately 50 operators per shift, creating a busy, multicultural environment where independent, self-motivated individuals thrive. Steel-toe footwear is required, and hearing protection is available on site if needed. The operation relies on propane sit-down counterbalance forklifts, paper shipping documents transitioning to complex digital shipping software, and standard dock equipment to manage high volumes of inbound and outbound freight. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Surrey, BC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.75 - $25.75/hr. Workplace Type This is a fully onsite position in Surrey,BC.
