Job DescriptionJob Description
Our client is seeking a FT Estimator Alberta to support the Transmission Program Management team.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed cost estimates for transmission projects, including overhead and underground lines, substations, and asset replacement or upgrade programs
Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, standards, and scopes of work to support estimate development
Complete detailed quantity take-offs and determine labour, equipment, and material requirements
Apply standardized estimating methodologies, unit rates, and historical cost data
Identify estimating assumptions, cost drivers, risks, and uncertainties, including development of escalation and contingency allowances
Collaborate with Engineering and Construction to assess constructability, sequencing, and execution strategies
Support capital budget development, business case preparation, and Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) filings
Review contractor estimates, tender submissions, and change orders for scope completeness and cost reasonableness
Maintain estimating databases, cost models, and estimating documentation
Prepare and maintain Basis of Estimate documentation, including inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions
Participate in post-project reviews to improve estimating accuracy and processes
Other duties that may be assigned consistent with the job description
Requirements
Strong understanding of transmission and substation project execution, including construction means and methods
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
Strong attention to detail and documentation practices
Proficiency with estimating tools and spreadsheets (specific tools to align with company standards)
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for field visits within Edmonton
Diploma or degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline
Intermediate Level: 5–7 years of estimating experience in electric transmission, power utilities, or heavy civil infrastructure
Senior Level: 8+ years of relevant estimating experience with demonstrated leadership capability
Proven experience estimating high-voltage transmission and/or substation projects
Professional designation (P.Eng., C.E.T., or equivalent) is considered an asset
Experience in a regulated transmission utility environment and familiarity with AUC capital governance processes is considered an asset
