The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral (CGRS D) program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to more fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards. CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or decrease due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity. The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $72,265,000. Of this $72,265,00: Approximately $71,065,000 over three (3) years will be available for the open Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral competition; enough to fund approximately 591 awards. $1,200,000 will be available over three (3) years to fund at least ten (10) additional awards to support meritorious Black Scholars . The maximum amount per award is $40,000 per year for up to three (3) years. Award funding is allocated as follows: Training stipend: $40,000 per annum. Applicant self-identification information may be used by CIHR to consider individuals for designated funding, should it become available. In Budget 2024 , funding was provided to support an increase in the number of awards, a portion of which will be dedicated to support priority research areas. Agencies will make additional award offers for selected meritorious applications that align with one or more of the priority areas. The priority research areas are: Advanced digital technologies (including AI, quantum, and cybersecurity) Health, including biotechnology Clean technology and resource value chains Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic Food and water security Democratic and community resilience Manufacturing and advanced materials Defenceand dual-use technologies The Government of Canada has provided additional funds to increase direct support for Black scholars . Canadian applicants (including permanent residents and protected persons) who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated to specific groups may be able to receive this funding through a doctoral scholarship as part of this initiative. CIHR has 10 additional CGRS D awards reserved for this initiative. Up to 29 awards will be reserved to support meritorious First Nation, Inuk (Inuit), or Métis (Indigenous) 1 applicants whose nations or communitiesare located inCanada. To the limit of available funding,Indigenousapplicantswho receive an award will also be offered a supplement valued at $5,000for one year. To be considered for this funding applicants must complete and upload the CGRS D Indigenous Attestation Form with their application in ResearchNet. Conditions of Funding In addition to the general conditions of funding governing CIHR awards , the following are the program specific conditions of funding applicable to this funding opportunity: This award must be accepted within 15 working days of the date of offer or the award will be cancelled and potentially offered to the next fundable applicant. Successful applicants must begin their award within 12 months of the earliest possible start date and start May 1, September 1 or January 1 following the offer of award. Awards will begin only after the successful applicant has registered in a full-time doctoral program and has provided official confirmation from the Registrar's office of their registration. If the successful recipient holds another federally-funded award, it must be terminated prior to the start of the CIHR Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral (CGRS D) award. Data related to First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities whose traditional and ancestral territories are in Canada must be managed in accordance with data management principles developed and approved by those communities, and on the basis of free, prior and informed consent. This includes, but is not limited to, considerations of Indigenous data sovereignty, as well as data collection, ownership, protection, use, and sharing. The Nominated Principal Applicant will be required to contribute to the monitoring, review and evaluation of CIHR's programs, policies and processes by participating in evaluation studies, surveys, workshops, audits and providing data or reports as required for the purpose of collecting information to assess progress and results. For applications submitted to this competition, and having also requested to be considered for one or more research areas, applicants must consent to the use and disclosure of full application and nominative information to CIHR and Partners (e.g. completed relevance forms, project titles) for relevancy review and/or funding decision by the relevant sponsors. Funding Decision Upon completion of the peer review, CIHR will generate ranking lists for each committee. These lists will be used for funding decision-making purposes and will remain anonymous. Applications will be funded by committee from the top down in order of ranking as far as the budget will allow. Up to 15% of all doctoral awards will be available to international applicants. International applicants are those who are not considered Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or Protected Persons under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) at the time of application. Up to 20% of all doctoral awards will be available to applicants who have indicated a host institution outside of Canada. CIHR reserves the right to break ties in ranking by using the committee percent rank followed by consolidated reviewer percent rank for ties between applications in different committees, and using consolidated reviewer percent rank for ties between applications within a committee. Applications that receive a final rating below 3.5 will not be funded. The names of successfully funded applicants will be published on the CIHR website . Indigenous Applicants Applying to Quota Institutions Institutions may recommend applications from Indigenous applicants whose nations or communities are located in Canada to the doctoral awards competition beyond their application quota *, provided that the required attestation form has been completed. Indigenous applicants must agree to their personal information being used for this purpose by making the appropriate selection in the application form. Eligible self-identified Indigenous applicants who are required to submit directly to the appropriate agency are automatically evaluated in the national competition. *The term quota refers to the maximum number of applications an institution can forward to each agency's national competition. Institutions receive separate quotas from each agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC).
