JOB TITLE Director of Finance SALARY $80,000-$105,000 JOB STATUS permanent-full-time Summary Of Position The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) is a growing non‑profit organization committed to providing safe harbor to over 650 animals annually, supporting families in need through programs like Major's Legacy and New Beginnings, and building a future of innovative, compassionate animal welfare. We are seeking a strategic and highly dedicated Director of Finance to join our leadership team. This role requires a unique combination of strategic thinking, operational expertise, and hands‑on execution. The ideal candidate is solution‑focused, innovative, and committed to ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our organization. While experience in animal welfare is not required, a background in non‑profit finance is highly valued. The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including full‑cycle accounting, payroll, budgeting, and reporting. This role provides strategic financial guidance to the Executive Director and Board, ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, and drives innovative solutions to enhance organizational efficiency. The Director of Finance is both a strategic leader and a “doer,” actively involved in day‑to‑day financial operations while leading long‑term planning and risk management initiatives. Duties And Responsibilities Prepare month‑end and year‑end financial statements. Develop and deliver summarized financial reporting for Board and leadership review. Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and ensure records are audit‑ready. Oversee bank reconciliations, online banking, and cash flow management. Track deferred grant revenue and provide related reporting. Compliance & Risk Management File all necessary tax filings, including PST, GST, T3010, and gaming‑related reports. Manage insurance renewals for vehicles, liability, D&O, and cyber coverage; obtain insurance certificates as required. Maintain internal controls and ensure all records are audit‑ready. Conduct risk analysis and compliance reporting for Board meetings. Payroll & Benefits Management Process bi‑weekly payroll for hourly and salaried employees (weekend/stat work may occasionally be required). Administer employee benefits, RRSPs, and ensure CRA payroll remittance compliance. Prepare T4s and quarterly/annual reporting for Worksafe. Budgeting & Financial Planning Lead the drafting of annual departmental budgets in collaboration with managers. Monitor financial performance and recommend improvements or efficiencies. Draft projection reports and revenue plans Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversee invoice approval, vendor payments, EFT processing, and credit card reconciliations. Manage issuance of invoices under existing contracts and other miscellaneous billing. Administer corporate credit cards and related accounts. Act as administrator for various finance‑related websites and platforms. Liaise with external IT providers as required. Ensure organizational systems, licenses, and alarm users are up to date. Overall LAPS Vision And Operation Support and promote the vision and strategic plan of LAPS Ensure positive public relations and customer service practices Ensure compliance with all protocols, procedures, and policies. Working Conditions Fast paced and dynamic with competing priorities At times extensive sitting, standing or activity during entire shift if required Frequent exposure to computer video terminal and computer peripherals Workdays are 8 hours. Work schedules are flexible depending on the needs of the organization. This position requires work on evenings and weekends shifts for special events or programming Environment can be noisy, odorous, and stressful, both physically and emotionally Required Qualifications Hands‑on experience with accounting systems; experience with Sage 50 is considered an asset. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with sound judgment and a strategic mindset. Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships with staff, leadership, external partners, and other stakeholders. Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, maturity, and good judgment, particularly when handling confidential or sensitive information. Solution‑oriented, adaptable, and committed to organizational success. Ability to remain professional and composed in challenging or high‑pressure situations. Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and comfortable learning and using new technology. Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence. Education And Training Post‑secondary education in accounting, finance, or related field (CPA designation preferred). Minimum 7–10 years of progressive finance experience, including non‑profit experience preferred.
