Director, Commercial Underwriting (Calgary – Hybrid)
Our client, a well-established commercial P&C insurer operating across Western Canada, is seeking a
Director, Commercial Underwriting
to lead their Prairie region (Calgary & Edmonton). This is a senior leadership role reporting to the VP of Underwriting, with oversight of two Underwriting Managers (each leading ~ 5-8 staff) and an Executive Underwriter.
The Role
You will provide strategic direction, leadership, and coaching across the regional underwriting team while ensuring strong portfolio performance, underwriting quality, and continued growth. This role is ideal for someone comfortable leading through leaders and handling complex commercial risks.
What We’re Looking For
10+ years in commercial P&C underwriting
Proven people leadership experience (ideally managing managers)
Strong technical expertise in complex risks (construction, oil & gas preferred)
Ability to drive performance, develop talent, and influence strategy
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
CIP (asset)
Willingness to travel 1–2 times per quarter
