Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive, the Director of Clinical Services provides strategic and operational leadership for a diverse clinical portfolio that includes Emergency, Perioperative Services, Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, and Mental Health Programs. This role is integral to advancing high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care across the hospital ensuring clinical operations, workforce planning, and care delivery models align with both current needs and the evolving future state of SMH. The Director of Clinical Services is accountable for enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration across the continuum of care and for creating the conditions that support excellence in professional practice, aligned with current Standards of Practice, legislative requirements, and organizational priorities. The Director contributes to service planning, implementation, and evaluation, ensuring achievement of organizational goals consistent with SMH’s vision, mission, and values. Success in this role requires a leader who excels in complex problem-solving, drives continuous quality improvement, and fosters a people-first culture that supports staff engagement, clinical excellence, and positive patient and family experiences in a community hospital setting. Key Responsibilities The Director of Clinical Services is accountable for the overall leadership, coordination, and performance of the assigned clinical programs, including but not limited to the following: Clinical & Operational Leadership Provide visionary, values-based leadership that supports high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care across Emergency, Perioperative, Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, and Mental Health Programs. Plan, coordinate, and evaluate patient care services to ensure exceptional patient, family, and caregiver experiences. Support clinical decision-making by enabling evidence-informed practices and continuous professional practice advancement. Ensure quality, safety, risk management, and performance standards are met and sustained. Strategic Planning & System Integration Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical and operational strategies aligned with SMH’s Strategic Plan. Collaborate with internal leaders, credentialed staff leaders, and community partners to advance integrated, seamless care across the continuum. Work collaboratively with Ontario Health and external partners to support regional priorities and system-wide initiatives. People Leadership & Culture Promote a culture of patient and staff safety, psychological safety, and individual accountability. Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing interdisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, respect, and professional growth. Provide clear direction and leadership for human resource management, including recruitment, performance management, labour relations, coaching, discipline, and staff development. Financial & Resource Management Maintain fiscal accountability for all financial and human resources within the portfolio, including development and management of the annual operating budget. Ensure effective utilization of resources through sound planning, forecasting, and performance monitoring. Lead multiple projects and initiatives related to operations, service delivery, and policy development. Governance & Collaboration Collaborate closely with the Executive Leadership Team, Physician Leaders, Directors, Managers, and interprofessional teams to ensure effective teamwork, achievement of program outcomes, and efficient use of resources. Support the implementation of program recommendations and achievement of targeted clinical, operational, and financial outcomes. Model professional leadership behaviors consistent with SMH’s mission and values. Education Master’s Degree in a health-related discipline or health administration preferred, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field combined with equivalent leadership experience. Regulated Health Professional (i.e. current CNO registration or equivalent); or other professional designation required. Experience Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience at the Manager or Director level, preferably within an acute care hospital; Emergency and/or Perioperative Service experience preferred. Strong knowledge of clinical, operational, and support systems within an acute care environment. Demonstrated experience in adult education, mentoring, leadership development, coaching, and change management. Leadership Certificate or equivalent education is considered an asset. Hours of Work Monday to Friday. Weekend work may be required as operational needs dictate. As a leader at SMH, participation in the leadership On-Call rotation, including evenings and weekends, is required.
