Purpose of the Role
Decentralize accounting execution to the individual entities while centralizing financial oversight, reporting, controls, and leadership.
Position Summary
The Director of Finance is responsible for leading the finance and accounting functions across multiple entities within the Peter Ballantyne Developments Limited Partnership (PBDLP) group of companies. This role provides financial leadership, operational oversight, reporting direction, budgeting support, forecasting, cash management, internal controls, and team development across a diverse portfolio of businesses.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Finance serves as a key member of the finance leadership team and supports the long-term growth, scalability, and financial sustainability of the organization. The role is responsible for driving decentralized accounting ownership within each entity while maintaining strong centralized financial oversight, consistency, and reporting standards across the group.
The Director of Finance works closely with operational leadership teams to provide meaningful financial insight, strengthen accountability, support strategic decision‑making, and improve overall financial performance. This position is intended to serve as a senior finance leadership role with future growth and succession potential within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes across all assigned entities.
Review and analyze:
Current month actual versus budget reporting
Year‑to‑date actual versus budget reporting
Forecast‑to‑year‑end reporting
Financial dashboards and KPI reporting
Project reporting for construction operations
Property performance reporting
Cash flow forecasting and analysis
Provide narrative analysis and recommendations related to financial performance and operational results.
Prepare executive‑level reporting packages for Chief Financial Officer; Executive Leadership; Entity leadership teams and Board reporting, as required.
Support the development and implementation of meaningful operational and financial KPIs.
Annual Reporting & Audit Coordination
Lead year‑end financial reporting processes across all assigned entities.
Coordinate preparation of working papers; supporting schedules; account reconciliations; audit support documentation.
Act as primary liaison with external accounting firms and auditors during year‑end engagements.
Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, policies, and reporting requirements.
Accounting Operations & Oversight
Provide oversight and support for complex accounting transactions including:
Amortization calculations
Accrual entries
Work‑in‑progress calculations
Revenue recognition
Intercompany transactions and reconciliation
Capital asset accounting
Ensure accounting processes and financial controls are operating effectively across all entities.
Support process improvement initiatives to strengthen reporting accuracy, efficiency, and accountability.
Oversee financial governance, approval processes, and internal controls.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Management
Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes across all assigned entities.
Partner with operational leadership teams to:
Develop annual budgets
Monitor performance against budget
Analyze variances
Identify operational and financial risks
Oversee weekly cash reporting, accounts receivable and payable reporting and 13‑week cash flow forecasting.
Maintain oversight of banking administration and cash management processes.
Act as authorized cheque signer and online payment approver, as required.
Leadership & Team Development
Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to finance and accounting staff across the organization.
Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning within the finance team.
Build and support a decentralized accounting structure that promotes accountability and ownership at the entity level.
Foster collaboration, consistency, and continuous improvement across finance operations.
Operational & Strategic Support
Provide financial guidance and support to operational leaders and business units.
Support mergers, acquisitions, growth initiatives, and special projects through financial analysis and modelling.
Assist with strategic planning initiatives and long‑term financial planning.
Support the evaluation and implementation of financial systems, workflows, and operational processes.
Maintain oversight of finance‑related systems, workflows, and document management practices.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
Minimum 3–5 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
Strong management accounting and financial reporting experience required.
Experience working within a multi‑entity or diversified business environment is considered an asset.
Experience supporting construction, property management, retail, fuel, or service‑based operations is considered an asset.
CPA designation is considered an asset but is not required.

Direct Reports:
Finance and accounting team members assigned across various operating entities.
Working Conditions
Primarily office‑based with periodic travel between operating locations as required.
May require occasional evening or weekend work based on operational or reporting deadlines.
Hybrid work flexibility may be considered based on operational requirements.
