Controls Specialist – HVAC Systems We are seeking a highly motivated Controls Specialist to join our product development team. This role is focused on the design, programming, and implementation of control strategies for our custom HVAC systems. The ideal candidate brings a solid background in DDC and PLC programming, strong understanding of HVAC operation theory, and hands-on experience supporting controls across the product lifecycle - from concept to commissioning. This is a cross-functional role requiring collaboration with mechanical, electrical, test, and field support teams to ensure seamless control integration and robust system performance. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include: Developing and programming control logic for HVAC systems using PLCs and DDC controllers Designing and implementing configurable firmware/software structures to support multiple system configurations with a focus on standardization and scalability Translating HVAC sequences of operation into practical, reliable, and serviceable control strategies Supporting QA and validation activities including unit testing, simulation, lab testing, and agency certifications Assisting field service teams with troubleshooting, commissioning, and performance optimization Coordinating with manufacturing teams to ensure design-for-assembly in control panel layouts and wiring harnesses Liaising with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders to define requirements and resolve technical issues Supporting both new product development (NPD) and existing product platforms The ideal candidate for this position will have: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or a Technical Diploma in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Instrumentation, or related field 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, preferably within HVAC or building automation Strong proficiency in IEC 61131-3 PLC programming (e.g., Carel, Schneider, etc.) Experience with BACnet, Modbus, LON, and IP-based communication protocols (BMS integration) Strong understanding of HVAC systems, sensors, and control strategies Familiarity with electrical schematics, panel layouts, and power distribution systems Knowledge of UL, CSA, and other applicable electrical/control compliance standards Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Valid passport and willingness to travel within Canada and the USA (approximately 5–20%) The preferred candidate for this position will have: Prior experience with HVAC control system design and sequence development. Experience with variable speed drive (VFD) integration and tuning. Exposure to IoT platforms, web services, and modern programming languages (Python, C#, Java, etc.). Understanding of electronic control manufacturing methods and mechanical CAD tools. Project management exposure or formal training.
