THE ROLE
We are partnering with a well-established and growing construction organization in Vancouver to recruit a
Controller
who will lead the accounting function and provide strategic financial leadership across a diverse portfolio of construction projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced construction finance professional who enjoys balancing hands-on accounting with leadership, process improvement, and business partnering. Reporting directly to executive leadership, the
Controller
will oversee all financial operations, support project teams with financial management, and ensure accurate financial reporting while helping drive the organization's continued growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Leadership & Accounting Operations
Lead and oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, project accounting, and general accounting functions.
Manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Maintain the integrity of financial records and ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal controls.
Develop and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to improve efficiency and support business growth.
Financial Reporting & Planning
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
Lead the annual budgeting process, quarterly forecasts, and cash flow planning.
Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
Coordinate year-end audit activities and liaise with external auditors and advisors.
Support executive leadership with financial analysis, reporting, and business planning initiatives.
Project Financial Management
Partner with Project Managers from project start-up through completion to establish financial reporting structures and project controls.
Oversee project costing, progress billings, accounts receivable, and profitability reporting.
Review project budgets, commitments, change orders, and cost allocations to ensure financial accuracy.
Monitor project financial performance, identify risks, and recommend corrective actions where required.
Ensure financial information is accurately maintained across accounting and project management systems.
Operational & Business Partnership
Collaborate with project teams to improve financial visibility and operational performance.
Review trade invoices, payment certifications, and contract compliance.
Provide financial insight to support project decision-making and improve profitability.
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows through technology, automation, and process improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
CPA designation preferred.
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
Previous experience within the construction industry is required.
Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, progress billing, holdbacks, WIP reporting, and project profitability.
Experience with Premier Construction or similar construction ERP systems is considered a strong asset.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
